Fate · Oozh

This chapter says that gains, losses and even our wisdom travel in part along the road of fate, and that one who understands its strength should keep an even mind in good times and bad. To call fate mighty is not to give up effort but to grow humility and calm.

Introduction

The fourth section of the Virtue part of the Thirukkural is the section on Fate, 'Oozhiyal', and it holds a single chapter: Oozh, Fate. After laying out the duties of the prologue, household life and renunciation, Valluvar sets this chapter at the end of them. The reason is that we see many people suffering despite doing right, and some people prospering without it. This contradiction needs an explanation, so he speaks of fate as a power that works beyond human effort. 'Oozh' means order, the arrangement by which deeds done earlier come to fruit. Indian tradition calls it vidhi, oozhvinai or prarabdha.

Look at the shape of the ten verses. The first two say that when fate is favourable effort and intelligence grow, and when it is unfavourable sloth and bewilderment arrive. The third and fourth distinguish inborn nature from learning, and wealth from clear wisdom. The fifth says that when fate turns, good things become bad and bad things become good. The sixth and seventh show what fate allots and the inability to enjoy wealth where it does not allow. A subtle thought about renunciation appears in the eighth. The ninth asks for the same temper of mind in good and in bad. The tenth ends with a statement of the might of fate.

It would be a mistake to read this chapter as 'no effort is needed, all is destiny'. Valluvar himself says in the chapter on Perseverance that those who strive without ceasing and without slackening will see even fate turn its back, in the verse 'oozhaiyum uppakkam kaanbar'. So to speak of the strength of fate here is not an excuse for sloth. It is a humility and clarity that keeps the mind from shattering when defeat arrives. For some verses commentators give differing explanations, and we shall note them in place.

In our own life we feel this too. The same effort brings success to one person and, for some reason, failure to another. At such times envy and complaint arise. This thought about fate lessens pride in success and bitterness in failure. The story of Nala and Damayanti in the Mahabharata is a portion of the epic that shows with great beauty the rise and fall of a life.

Chapter story

Nala and Damayanti

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata comes the Nalopakhyana. The sage Brihadashva, the text says, told Yudhishthira the story of Nala to console him in his forest sorrow. Nala, king of Nishadha, was a man of great qualities, unmatched in driving horses and in cooking. Damayanti, princess of Vidarbha, was beautiful and wise. A swan carried messages between them and praised each to the other.

At Damayanti's swayamvara, four gods, Indra, Agni, Varuna and Yama, also came. They took Nala's form. But Damayanti recognised the true Nala and garlanded him. The gods blessed them. But the dark power Kali, unable to win Damayanti, grew angry and cast his shadow upon Nala. 'I shall bring Nala down,' he vowed.

After years of waiting, the text says, Kali entered Nala at a moment when he committed a small lapse of purity. After that Nala became fond of dice. He played with his brother Pushkara. He lost again and again, and gave up kingdom, wealth and garments. Damayanti warned him but he did not listen. His judgement was clouded.

Nala and Damayanti went to the forest. Hunger and grief confused his mind. One night, as Damayanti slept, he thought, 'She suffers because of me,' and left her there. Waking, Damayanti wept to find her husband gone. Passing through many forest troubles, she came to stay in the palace of Chedi.

In the forest Nala rescued the serpent Karkotaka. The serpent bit him and changed his form, the story says, and this tormented Kali and hid Nala's identity. Under the name Bahuka he joined King Rituparna of Ayodhya as a charioteer.

Damayanti tried to find her husband and spread word of a second swayamvara. She knew that only someone with Nala's horse skill could reach Vidarbha in a single day. Rituparna arrived with Bahuka as charioteer. Seeing Bahuka's skill, Damayanti realised he was Nala. Nala received from Rituparna the secret of dice, and Kali left him. Nala recovered his own form and his kingdom, the story ends.

The play of fate is clear in this tale: Nala prospered when fortune smiled, lost everything when Kali entered and his judgement clouded, and then rose again. His life shows both 'aakoozh' and 'pokoozh'. Even in suffering, Damayanti's love and Nala's effort restored them.

Through every trial of forest, separation and disguise, Damayanti never lost hope and found her husband again. Her steadiness and intelligence are the shining part of the tale.

We can take a simple lesson from it: fate turns, so neither pride in success nor collapse in failure is needed.

Key lessons

  • When fate is favourable wisdom and effort grow; when it is not, confusion and sloth come. Stay alert to this.
  • Wealth and clear wisdom are different things; the rich are not always the wise.
  • Do not rejoice too much in good or grieve too much in bad.
  • Understanding the strength of fate brings humility; it does not tell us to give up effort.
  • Fate gives what is due without fail; our part is to do our duty.
