Explanation

In this verse 'vaguththaan' means the one who allots, or fate itself. Commentators take it as God, or as the power that ordains fate. In any reading, the idea is that while gathering wealth may be in a person's hand, enjoying it falls within what fate has allotted. Even those who have amassed crores do not always get the chance to enjoy them.

To enjoy is not merely to spend; it is to experience and delight. Many hold wealth but lack health, have money but no time, have comfort but no kinship, and live without being able to enjoy their riches. This is the rare state the verse speaks of. Gathering is one art and enjoying is another, and receiving both together is a gift of fate.

The verse does not despise wealth. In the section on Wealth Valluvar says in many places that there is no fault in making wealth when it is made righteously. But it does hint that it is better not to stop at gathering, and to learn to use wealth well and to share it with others.

In today's life this can be seen very clearly. There are those who work and save in youth and, in old age, cannot enjoy it because of poor health. The lesson we can draw is to share a little of what is in our hands today, to enjoy it and to live with gratitude, without waiting. We have no assurance of tomorrow.

A story

The Chettiar's Gold and Grain

This is an imagined tale told in a Hindu cultural setting. In a small town of Chettinad lived a great merchant named Muthaiah Chettiar. He had grown up in poverty. Working day and night and trading with Burma and Ceylon, he built the biggest mansion in the town. Crores of wealth filled his strongrooms.

He always lived with an accountant's mind. If he bought new clothes for Deepavali he thought of the expense. When asked for a donation for the temple festival, he said, 'Let us see next year.' Even the hours when the family ate together he spent over his ledgers. 'When I retire I will enjoy everything,' was what he always said.

At the age of sixty he decided to retire. But that same year he developed diabetes and a stomach ailment. The doctor imposed strict diet: no sweets, no oil, only gruel and vegetables. His cook prepared grand feasts every day, and he had to sit and watch.

One day when he went to the temple of his town, he saw a free meal being served. He watched poor people eating happily. A boy, having eaten to his fill, looked at him and smiled. That smile awoke in him a fullness he had never felt before.

From that day the Chettiar set aside a large part of his income for feeding the hungry. He arranged for hundreds to eat daily at the temple. The townspeople say that though he could not eat a mouthful himself, he took joy in watching others eat.

One day he smiled, wondering whether this was the 'retirement' he had always imagined. He had been able to gather wealth, but the enjoying took a different form in the way fate had ordained. He did not consume it himself, but what he gave filled the stomachs and hearts of many.
