Explanation

This verse tells how fate shows itself in our state of mind and action. 'Aakoozh' is the fate that brings increase, a time when growth and wealth are coming. At such a time a person finds 'asaivinmai' in himself, an unwavering firmness in effort. He himself does not know why he acts so steadily; his thinking becomes clear, his body brisk, and opportunities catch his eye.

In contrast, 'pokoozh' is the time that makes one lose wealth. Then 'madi', sloth, arrives. There come mornings when one does not wish to rise, tasks that are put off, and a weariness that says 'all this is useless'. The subtlety is that Valluvar sees sloth not as coming after the loss but as a sign preceding it. We can also take it as saying that sloth is itself a cause of the loss. Fate works through states of mind, so by watching ours we can sense its course. One who meets sloth with alertness may slowly turn even a time of loss.

In life today there are seasons when everything runs smoothly and others when nothing moves. One who knows both saves and learns as much as he can in the good season, and in the hard season resists sloth and stands firm in small acts. These two habits are the pillars that hold us up amid the ups and downs of fate.

A story

Vikramaditya and Shani

In Indian tradition a story connecting King Vikramaditya of Ujjain with the planetary deity Shani is told in many ways. It is a traditional tale and exists in many versions. Its centre is one: it shows how a person's mind and action change when his fate turns.

Vikramaditya was known as a king full of justice, valour and generosity. One day, the story says, a debate arose in his court about which of the planets was greatest. The scholars said that Shani's power was supreme. The king, in play, said, 'I shall face the rule of Shani.' Hearing this, Shani came to him and said, 'For seven and a half years I shall seize you. Which period do you choose?'

The king chose a certain stretch. When it began, his thoughts and acts grew confused. He did not listen to good counsel. Small mistakes became great ones. His wealth melted away and his fame faded. A false blame was laid upon him. In one version of the tale he lost his hands and feet as punishment.

Wandering from town to town, he took shelter with a humble oil-presser and lived by working there. Even when weariness and sloth came upon him in that time, he did not lose his intelligence and character altogether.

When the seven and a half years ended, Shani came again and said, 'You withstood my hold,' and restored everything to him. His limbs, his kingdom and his fame returned. Tradition adds that afterwards he ruled with greater humility than before.

The verse speaks clearly in this tale: when the fate of loss comes, sloth and bewilderment come; when the fate of gain comes, unwavering effort appears. That Vikramaditya did not entirely give up effort in his bad time was the reason he came back. Even a dark season is not permanent.

To reflect on

Think of a hard season you have gone through. What small habit kept you steady, and what slipped when your energy dropped?
