Explanation

In the last verse of the chapter Valluvar says in a single line both the nature of desire and the gain from removing it. 'Aaraa iyarkai avaa' means that desire is by nature never filled. 'Aaraa' means never satisfied, never saying enough. Like a hunger that no meal can fill, desire knows no fullness. To try to find peace by satisfying it is like trying to fill the sea with a pot.

The second half holds a hope: 'annilaiye peraa iyarkai tharum'. In the very instant desire is removed, an unshakeable nature shows itself. 'Peraa' means unmoved. The emphatic ending of 'annilaiyae' suggests speed. There is no waiting between the going of desire and the arising of peace.

The verse draws the three chapters of the ascetic section to a point. Renunciation is letting go of attachment, truth-consciousness is knowing its truth, and the curbing of desire is bringing it to completion in practice. What comes at the end is the unmoving state.

Our life today is constantly in motion. We rise in praise and sink in blame. An unshaken mind does not mean one as insensitive as stone; it is like the sea, whose waves rise but whose depths stay still. A mind that has withdrawn from the waves of desire gains that deep calm. Just as the surface of a lake has no power to disturb the stillness at its bottom, outer praise and blame lose their hold on one who rests there.

A story

Bhartrihari's Decision

Indian tradition tells a famous story about Bhartrihari, the king and poet. He is said to have ruled at Ujjain and to have composed three collections of a hundred verses each: the Vairagya Shataka, the Niti Shataka and the Shringara Shataka. The details of the story are told in different versions. It is a traditional legend, not a claim of firm history.

In the tale, a poor Brahmin, after long austerity, received a fruit that would grant undying life. Rather than eat it himself, he decided to present it to the king for the welfare of the country. King Bhartrihari accepted it lovingly. But he gave the fruit to his beloved queen.

The queen, however, was fond of a keeper of the horses, and she gave the fruit to him. He, desiring a maidservant, gave it to her. The maidservant, praising the king, offered the fruit to him. When Bhartrihari saw the fruit back in his own hand, he was startled.

Learning the truth, the king's heart broke. He understood that even the wife he had loved so much was not steady in that love, and how desire spins the wheel round and round. Giving up kingdom, wife and wealth, he went to the forest, the tradition says.

A verse in his Vairagya Shataka is famous, expressing that desire stays young while we grow old. He tells of the unquenchable nature of desire, and also sings of the peace that came after it was dropped.

This tale is a picture matching 'desire is never filled' and 'in that very state it gives an unshaken nature'. The king saw the unfulfilled nature of desire in the journey of a single fruit, and at the instant he let go he reached a steady calm.
