Modes of Action · Vinaiseyalvakai

This chapter lays out the method of action: how to think a task through, when to begin, and how to carry it to the end. Valluvar asks us to decide firmly, act without needless delay, weigh the five factors of any undertaking, learn from experts and handle friends and foes with wisdom.

Introduction

In the Porutpaal of the Kural, the Amaichiyal is the section on the counsellors who stand beside a ruler. After the chapters on ministers, power of speech, purity and firmness in action comes Vinai Seyal Vakai, 'the modes of action'. A minister with good intentions is not enough; he must also know how to turn those intentions into deeds. This chapter is Valluvar's compact manual for that craft.

The first two verses are about time. Once a matter has been weighed and decided, delay is harmful, says Valluvar. Yet he also asks us to do slowly what should be done slowly, and never to doze over what must be done at once. The third verse teaches flexibility: go straight where the way is open, and where it is not, look for the way that can be taken. The fourth warns about leftovers. An unfinished task or an unsubdued enemy is like a spark of fire left unquenched, ready to flare up again.

The fifth and sixth verses are the heart of planning. Resources, instruments, time, the nature of the work and the place must all be examined, together with the effort required, the obstacles and the likely gain, before one begins. The seventh verse tells us to learn the secret of a task from one who has mastered it. The eighth describes the art of using one undertaking as the means to another, as a tame elephant is used to bring in a wild one. The ninth and tenth verses turn to people: enemies should be won over quickly, and the weak, living in fear, should find shelter with the great.

All of this applies directly to our own lives. Whoever starts a business, builds a house or prepares for an examination faces the same questions: what do we have, which tools do we need, when should we begin, where should the work be done, and from whom should we learn? Patience in seeking the answers, and courage in acting once they are found, must go together if work is to be completed. Valluvar holds that balance steady across ten short verses.

Chapter story

A Bridge over the Sea

From the Ramayana. When Hanuman returned from Lanka with news that he had found Sita, Rama's heart steadied. He marched with the vanara army to the southern shore, and there the endless waves rose and roared before them. Everyone in the army stood with the same question: how could this sea be crossed?

Rama stood silent for a while. Vibhishana, who had come to him for refuge, advised him to seek the help of the lord of the ocean. Rama sat on darbha grass by the shore and kept a vow for three days, calling on the sea. When the god did not appear and Rama reached for his bow, the lord of the ocean came forward and bowed in humility. He told Rama that the vanara Nala carried the grace of Vishvakarma, the divine architect, and that any bridge Nala built, the sea would bear.

From that day a great plan took shape. At Sugriva's command the vanara host went into the forests and brought rocks and trees. The strongest uprooted hills; the smaller ones carried small stones. Nala calculated where each stone should lie and in what order, and guided the builders. The five things the Kural speaks of came together: abundant material, stones as the instrument, Nala as the skilled hand, a calm season on the water and a narrow place to span.

Work went on day after day with order. A few leagues were laid on the first day, more on the next, and the bridge stretched outward. Tradition says the stones floated, and many devotees say the name of Rama was inscribed on them. That is the way of devotion. What we should notice is that each person did his part with discipline.

Tradition also tells of a little squirrel that rolled in the sand and shook it between the stones. The great ones laughed, but Rama watched with affection and stroked its back with his fingers. It is the mark of a leader that even the smallest effort is counted as part of the task.

On the fifth day, the Ramayana says, the bridge touched the shore of Lanka, and the whole army crossed along it. It was work done without hesitation once decided, and with order once examined. Those who had stood before the sea as before an obstacle made the sea itself their road. This is what the chapter teaches: when purpose, shared labour, careful planning and faith come together, even an ocean becomes a path.

Key lessons

  • Examine a matter well before deciding, and do not delay once you have decided.
  • Plan around the five factors: resources, instruments, time, nature of the work and place.
  • Learning from one who knows saves half the labour.
  • An unfinished task or an unsubdued foe is like a spark that can flare up again.
  • When the straight way is blocked, bend; and try to turn adversaries into allies.
