Explanation

The verse speaks of two situations for action. In the first, circumstances are favourable and we should act without hesitation. 'Wherever it is possible' means every place where the work can be done. To stand aside when an opening is there is waste. This is the straight path of action.

The second situation arises when an obstacle appears. If the direct way is closed, butting against it is no wisdom. 'Looking for the way that can be taken' means searching carefully for another passable route. Water does not try to shatter a rock in its path; it flows around and continues. The same suppleness is needed in work, because an unbending stance can cost us the very goal.

There is a delicate distinction to notice here. Changing the route is not the same as changing the goal. The goal must stay firm; only the path may bend. When one job is not available and a person enters another field where the same skills are useful, or when a project is blocked and is finished by another method, we see the verse in life. Read as a whole, it gives a double wisdom: first try the straight way, and if it cannot be taken, go around with skill.

A story

Towards Dwaraka

A tradition told in the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata. After Krishna had brought down Kamsa, king of Mathura, Kamsa's father-in-law Jarasandha, the king of Magadha, besieged Mathura with a vast army. The army of the Yadavas was small. Krishna and Balarama defeated him and sent him back many times, yet tradition says he returned every time.

If the war continued, the people would suffer, and yet Jarasandha's forces could not be wholly destroyed. Krishna saw that even victory in this war would not bring lasting peace. Another enemy, Kalayavana, was also rising in the north. With foes pressing from two sides, to continue straight-on resistance would only bring ruin to the Yadavas.

So Krishna sought another way. On the western coast, where the sea surrounded a stretch of land, he resolved to found a new city. Standing amid the waves, it came to be called Dwaraka. All the Yadavas left Mathura and settled there. The sea, which enemies could not easily cross, became their wall.

Some regarded this as retreat. But Krishna's aim was to protect his people, not to win a battle. Where the direct road was shut, he chose the road that could be taken. In Dwaraka the Yadavas grew in peace. The goal had not changed; only the path had. It is a good example of how the wisdom to go around an obstacle can be greater than destroying oneself against it.
