Explanation

Valluvar uses the word 'thoongu', to sleep or to take time, four times in this one verse, and the repetition is part of its charm. The heart of the verse is that wisdom lies in sleeping where sleeping is right and staying awake where it is not. Some tasks ripen only with time: planning a house, choosing a child's course of study or making a large investment. Haste there leads to mistakes, and unhurried thought is best.

But other tasks cannot bear even a moment's delay. A patient needs medicine at once, a soldier on the border must act at once, a withering crop must be watered at once. In such moments, 'let us see tomorrow' ends in harm. So the first need is to sort a task into its kind.

Two opposite mistakes are pointed out: hurrying where there should be no hurry, and lingering where hurry is needed. Avoiding both depends on understanding the nature of the work. From answering an email to choosing a life partner, if we separate what is urgent from what is slow, our energy is spent in the right place. We see this in old farming too. Before sowing, the land must be prepared patiently; yet once the rain comes, the sowing cannot be put off even a day. The farmer who feels this difference is the successful one. In life also, knowing which task needs patience and which needs speed is half the success.

A story

Hanuman's Two Speeds

From the Ramayana. When Hanuman went searching for Sita in Lanka, he moved with great patience. At night, in a tiny form, he looked through Ravana's palace, its halls, its inner chambers and its gardens, place after place, and let no corner escape him in haste. Even after he saw Sita in the Ashoka grove he did not leap down at once. He watched quietly from the tree, and only then showed Rama's ring and spoke with her gently. Here slowness was the right way.

Another scene came on the battlefield. Lakshmana fell unconscious, struck by the arrows of Indrajit. The physician Sushena said that the life-giving herb Sanjivani, from the Himalayas, would save him, but it must be brought before the night ended. Now every moment was life itself. Hanuman did not waste a breath. He leapt into the sky and flew north.

On the mountain he realised that it would take too long to recognise the right plant. Knowing this was no time for studying each herb, he lifted a part of the mountain itself, as tradition tells. Sushena took the herb, gave it to Lakshmana, and he rose.

The same Hanuman acted in two ways: slow and careful while searching in Lanka, swift as thought when running to save a life. Both were right in their place. Wisdom, as Valluvar shows it, is to read the nature of the task and change one's pace accordingly. Had he hurried in Lanka he might never have found Sita; had he lingered in the Himalayas he could not have saved Lakshmana.
