Conduct in the Presence of the King · Mannaraich Cherndhozhudhal

This chapter teaches how those who serve near a ruler or any person of power should conduct themselves. Like one warming himself at a fire, neither too near nor too far, and free of greed, careful in speech and humble, a courtier earns lasting good, says Valluvar.

Introduction

This chapter, within the Amaichiyal of the Kural, speaks of how ministers, officials and counsellors who work close to the king should conduct themselves. Being near power is at once a great opportunity and a great danger. If the king's trust is won, wealth and fame follow. But one small fault, one misunderstanding, one needless word may destroy everything. So the chapter stresses caution and subtlety.

The first verse is the emblem of the chapter. A man warming himself at a fire is burned if he goes too near, and chilled if he stands too far. Relations with the king are like that, says Valluvar. The second and third verses ask us to avoid greed and faults. Not coveting what the king desires brings lasting prosperity, and once suspicion has arisen, no one can wholly remove it. The fourth and fifth verses give the manners of the assembly: whispering and giggling are improper, and one must neither eavesdrop on hidden matters nor probe for them.

The sixth and seventh verses show the art of speech. One must read the king's hint and the season, and say what he wants to hear without bitterness; and it is better to withhold what is of no use even if he asks. The eighth verse tells us not to belittle a king because he is young or a relative, but to respect the glory that stands in him. The ninth and tenth verses warn against the carelessness that comes with closeness: those who think 'we have been accepted' or 'we are old friends' and then do improper things will come to ruin.

In today's life this fits those who work with the head of an institution, the aide of a political leader, or anyone who lives close to the senior member of a large family. As closeness grows, respect must not shrink; familiarity must not dissolve humility; and the desires that power brings must not pull us along. This chapter teaches composure and self-restraint.

Valluvar does not ask us to fear the king; he teaches the art of dealing with him. The balance he shows is to neither insult authority nor become its slave. In a sense these ten verses are lessons in self-restraint of four kinds: restraining desire, speech, curiosity and the sense of entitlement. One who learns them lives peacefully even beside the king, and protects himself in the storms of politics.

Chapter story

Vidura's Counsel by Night

From the Mahabharata. Among the ministers of Hastinapura, capital of the Kauravas, Vidura had a special place. He was the son of Vyasa, born to a mother outside the royal line, and so had no claim to the throne. Yet through his intelligence and righteousness he was the trusted adviser of King Dhritarashtra. Though near the king, he never sank into the greed that power brings.

After the Pandavas lost at dice and went into exile, Dhritarashtra could not sleep and was tormented by unease. One night he summoned Vidura and said, 'My mind is not at peace. Tell me what is good for me.' The words Vidura spoke then are honoured in the Mahabharata as the Vidura Niti. He did not insult the king, but he did not hide the truth either.

He framed his words with great care. He spoke general principles of righteousness: that the wise man is one who has mastered desire and anger; that one who does not subdue an enemy before he does harm will suffer; that for the sake of dharma even one of the clan may be given up. He left the king to connect these to his own actions. Without directly accusing, he spoke so that the king's own mind might recognise the truth.

He always chose the right time and place. The night, when the king was alone in his distress, was fit for such speech. He avoided shaming the king before the whole assembly, knowing that wounded pride might make him refuse to listen. He had no sense of being above others.

Dhritarashtra did not follow his pure counsel fully. His love for Duryodhana overpowered him. After Krishna's mission failed, Duryodhana insulted Vidura in the assembly itself. Vidura did not rage; tradition says that he broke his bow right there, declared he would take up arms for no side in this war, and left on a pilgrimage.

Though near the king, Vidura lived without being scorched; though he stood afar in the end, he had not abandoned the king. He knew three boundaries: when to speak truth in love, when to keep silence, and when to withdraw. Vidura's life illustrates the subtlety of nearness that Valluvar describes. For those who live near power today, it remains a guide.

The counsels in the Vidura Niti remain honoured. The Mahabharata says he spoke on friendship, wealth, anger, speech, kingship and purity of mind, and some of his lines are still quoted. But greater than they is his life. He always loved truth, yet had learned how to place it so that the king's mind could receive it. He did not fall prey to the desires power brings, and that is why his word was valued.
