Explanation

This verse is advice by way of forethought. People generally try to hide a fault after committing it, but Valluvar asks us to avoid the fault beforehand. 'The grave' may mean serious offences, or acts that are hard to repair. If the king trusts someone, that trust came from long observation. But if a single doubt arises in one moment, the whole trust is shaken.

Suspicion is a subtle disease. Once it enters the mind, every act is seen in its light. Even an innocent deed looks guilty through doubting eyes. The more explanations we give, the more the doubt may grow. 'Hard for anyone to clear' shows how difficult it really is to restore a king's belief. A bad name comes in a moment; a good name comes from years of effort.

This applies fully in our world too. A person responsible for finance who permits one small discrepancy in the accounts will carry suspicion for life. Therefore, acting openly and in good order wherever doubt could arise is the best protection. Better than saying 'I am innocent' is to create a state in which there is no room for suspecting me. Even small errors sometimes raise great doubts. So the habit of keeping honesty even in small matters is a fence around our good name. It is easier to be careful beforehand than to regret afterwards.

A story

The Pandavas in Hiding

From the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata. Having lost at dice, the Pandavas completed twelve years in the forest and then had to spend the thirteenth year in concealment. The condition was that if anyone recognised them in that year, they would have to go back to the forest for another twelve years. So they were extremely careful not to give room for even the slightest suspicion.

They reached the palace of Virata, king of Matsya. Yudhishthira took the name Kanka and served as the king's companion at dice, Bhima as Vallabha became a cook, Arjuna as Brihannala a dance teacher, Nakula took charge of the horses, Sahadeva of the cattle, and Draupadi as Sairandhri became a maid to the queen. Each hid his true strength and learning and acted as a humble servant.

Their conduct was very careful. Although Yudhishthira could have beaten the king at dice, he played so as not to wound his feelings. Bhima did not display his enormous strength and remained humble. The king did not suspect them at all. When Kichaka behaved improperly toward Draupadi, Bhima destroyed him in secret, and in a manner that did not reveal their identity.

At last, when the Kauravas invaded Matsya seeking the Pandavas, Arjuna fought openly and won. Tradition says that by then the period of concealment had been completed. Thus throughout that year they moved without raising any suspicion.

This scene illustrates Valluvar's thought. The Pandavas knew that suspicion, once roused, is hard to remove. So they acted in a way that left no ground for it. Those who live near the king must keep this in mind.
