Explanation

This is a finely observed verse about how to behave in an assembly. Two acts are named: whispering in someone's ear, and two people sharing a laugh. In the presence of great persons both should be restrained. Why? Because both give rise to wrong thoughts in others. If we whisper to the one beside us, those present may suspect, 'Are they talking about us?' If we laugh together they may think, 'Are they mocking us?'

At the same time this shows the respect we give the assembly. When great persons speak, full attention should be on them. If our attention is scattered into another's ear and into jokes, it is disrespect. When a king or an elder gives his view, to show full engagement is civility. The word for 'great and full' denotes people of learning and conduct, and in an assembly filled with them we should be restrained.

The same applies to meetings and classrooms today. Half-whispering to a neighbour in an important meeting, or sharing laughter and messages on a phone, seems an insult to the speaker. Assembly etiquette is a form of respect given to others. This verse recalls that respect. A further idea hidden here is that secret talk and whispering destroy trust. The habit of saying in hiding what cannot be said openly damages the unity of an assembly. An honest conversation can always be one that everyone may hear.

A story

A Lesson in the Navaratri Hall

In an old palace, a concert of music was held during the festival of Navaratri. This is an imagined tale. In the middle of the hall the vidwan Subramania Iyer sat and began an alapana of the raga his guru had taught him. In the front rows sat the king and the town's senior musicians. The young students sat at the back.

Among them Murthy and Kumar were close friends. Because the alapana went on at length, Murthy felt slightly bored. He leaned toward Kumar's ear and whispered something, about an amusing event of the day before. Kumar laughed behind his hand. Both their shoulders shook.

A senior vidwan in the front row noticed. The concert had been going only a few minutes. As he glanced back, the thought crossed his mind that the two might be laughing at him. His face tightened a little. The singer Iyer noticed it, and his attention wavered for a moment.

After the concert, the young men's teacher called them both. 'Your laughing was no sin. But the place was wrong. In an assembly full of the elders, whispering in the ear and laughing together create wrong impressions. Valluvar says the same.' Murthy lowered his head, went to the senior vidwan and begged pardon with humility.

The vidwan smiled and said, 'Music is a form of worship. When you sit in it, your whole mind must be there.' From that day Murthy and Kumar sat in concerts with attention and quiet. In that town it is said that they later became well-known musicians.
