Explanation

In this verse the heroine faults the haste of the eyes. The eyes did not look with deliberation; without thinking they saw in a moment. When so much sorrow has come from that sight today, they lack the patience to accept it. Parinthunaraa carries the meaning "without accepting with pity and understanding."

Unkan means eyes lined with kohl. The beauty of womanhood is mentioned here. The beautiful eyes looked beautifully; but their ignorance brought sorrow. Valluvar gives here an idea like a proverb: one who showed haste in action should also show patience in bearing its consequence.

In many other places in the Tirukkural, "acting after examining" is emphasised, and the whole chapter Therindhu Seyalvagai says so. Here the same principle applies to love. Whether deliberation is possible in love is a question; but Valluvar honestly states its consequence.

This will be a useful lesson for the young today. When feeling rises, do not ignore it entirely; but approach it calmly and think of future consequences. A good decision is born only when feeling and reason join. The word therindhunaraa points to the absence of deliberation in the look. Valluvar knows it is not easy to expect deliberation in love, which is why he grieves rather than accuses.

A story

Chitrangada and Arjuna

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata, Arjuna in exile went north-east and reached a city called Manipura. There he saw Chitrangada, daughter of King Chitravahana. Her beauty and valour attracted him. He wished to marry her. Love was born as soon as the eyes saw.

Arjuna asked Chitravahana for her hand. The king set a condition: the son born to them must become the king of Manipura. Arjuna agreed. Babruvahana was born to them. After staying there some months Arjuna had to continue his exile journey. He parted from Chitrangada.

Tradition says Chitrangada bore alone the consequence of the decision taken in haste. After he left she raised her son. Years passed. We can imagine that Arjuna's memory welled as tears in her eyes. Later, when Arjuna came to Manipura with the horse of the Ashvamedha sacrifice, a fight took place with his son Babruvahana, the Mahabharata says.

There are two sights in this story. One is Arjuna's look at Chitrangada and falling in love. The other is the years in which Chitrangada shed tears in separation. As the heroine of the Kural asks her eyes, it would be natural for her to think, "This is the result of looking without deliberating."

The Mahabharata tradition does not portray Arjuna as guilty; yet the relationships formed in his exile journeys are shown as involving parting. Duty and love often pull in opposite directions in life.

Hasty feelings may begin beautifully, but their responsibility continues for a long time. The tale thus illustrates that it is best for feeling and reason to work together.
