Explanation

This verse is a beautiful paradox showing that sleeplessness in love continues in both states. That when the husband does not come sleep does not come from longing is easily understood. The subtlety is that even after he has come sleep does not come. The reason is the fear that if she shuts her eyes he may vanish, or the surfeit of joy.

Aayidai means between the two situations. Both coming and not coming give her only sorrow. Commentators explain that her not sleeping when he came was from fear that he may go again. That is, in love even joy is mixed with fear.

This fits our experience too. When a loved one comes home after a long time, many parents cannot sleep the first night; being near them is joy, yet there is the worry of the day they will go again. It is a subtle state in which both feelings stand together.

Valluvar here does not speak only of sorrow; he speaks of the complexity of the human mind. This verse shows how closely joy and sorrow are joined. The first line of the Kural gives natural sorrow, and the second a surprising truth. It is by this contrast that the verse stays in our minds.

A story

Yashoda's Wakefulness

In Periyalvar's Periyalvar Tirumozhi there are many verses in the voice of Yashoda. In the pillai-tamil tradition the Alvar sings Krishna's childhood from Yashoda's viewpoint. In them a mother's love and fear appear together.

While Krishna was in Ayarpadi, because of his pranks Yashoda was attentive night and day. Her fear grew with incidents such as demons like Putana and Shakatasura coming to kill the child. Even with Krishna near her she could not sleep, for fear that he might slip off somewhere without her knowing.

When Krishna went to Mathura Yashoda's state became worse. In the nights without him she had no sleep. Commentators point out that the Alvars thus sing Yashoda's longing. When Krishna was there she did not sleep; when he was not there she did not sleep.

These two kinds of wakefulness resemble the state of the Kural's heroine. Eyes that do not sleep even when he came, eyes that do not sleep when he does not come. It becomes clear that love always brings wakefulness. A mother's love and a lover's love are of the same nature in this way.

These verses of Periyalvar are still sung on festival days in Vaishnava temples. Tradition also sees the mother's wakefulness as the wakefulness of the soul that loves the Lord.

In our homes too we may have noticed that parents do not sleep peacefully on the night the child goes out of town and on the night they return. It is our duty to understand their love and give them peace.
