Explanation

In this verse the heroine takes pity on the state of her eyes. The eyes wept so much; now their water has dried completely. Peyalaatraa means unable to rain. As a cloud rains itself dry, the eyes wept themselves dry. But the sickness they gave remains.

A great contradiction appears here. One may expect that sickness will lessen because the eyes wept. But even after they wept to exhaustion, the sickness has not lessened. She says the sickness is fixed on her. That is, weeping alone is not the remedy for sorrow. After tears dry, sorrow lodges deeper within.

There is also pity for the eyes in this statement. She who earlier blamed the eyes now commiserates that they have grown weary. Valluvar subtly shows how, at one stage of grief, anger turns to pity.

In today's life many experience a state in which tears do not come after deep loss. Sorrow that cannot weep is heavier than weeping. For such people, rather than mere words of comfort, a silent presence is more fitting. The phrase uyvil noy points to a sickness from which there is no escape, indicating the limit of sorrow. But the ending of the verse is not emptiness; beneath it is the hope found in the Indian tradition.

A story

Kausalya Whose Tears Ran Dry

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, when the news of Rama's exile reached Ayodhya, Kausalya was shattered. The news that her son Rama must live in the forest for fourteen years was unbearable for her. She tried to hold Rama back as he was leaving; she could not.

After Rama left she wept for many days. After Dasharatha died her grief doubled. Valmiki movingly shows her as one who lost husband and son at once. She sat alone in the palace performing worship. As days went on, her tears seemed to run dry.

When Bharata returned to Ayodhya and met her, she was in a withered form. Bharata swore to his mother his innocence. Hearing those words her heart softened a little. But the sickness of not seeing Rama did not leave her.

Though her eyes wept themselves out, her sorrow did not lessen. That is the idea of the Kural: after the water is gone, the sickness remains. The Ramayana says she came alive again on the day Rama returned after fourteen years.

That Kausalya's faith finally won teaches us: even when tears dry up, hope must not. Waiting held with hope becomes penance.

A mother's sorrow is the measure of depth of love. The tale shows that even when there are no tears, love has not gone out.
