Explanation

In this verse the heroine tells her heart a practical truth. By sitting here and brooding over him, nothing will change. No compassion comes from his side. The phrase 'irundhu ulli' points to sitting idle without any action and just thinking. By sitting and lamenting like that the body grows thin and the mind weary, and he will not even know of this grief. This truth hurts the heroine, but she tells it straight to her heart.

In 'parindhu ullal', 'parivu' means compassion. The nature of thinking of us with compassion is 'seydhaarkan il', that is, not in the one who caused the sickness. The phrase 'paidhal noi seydhaar' holds a subtlety. He is the one who gave the sickness; yet it also holds the hope that he could be the medicine too. So her deep pain is that the giver of the sickness does not show pity. Read together with the previous verse: there she said it was folly to grieve for one without love; here she says it is useless to sit and grieve for one without compassion. The two are a development of a single thought.

We can easily recognise this in present-day life. Staying awake all night thinking about someone who does not value us ruins only our own health. The verse hides an awareness that thought alone is not enough and that action is needed. She tells her heart to rise from sitting and thinking and do something. This is the first step out of sorrow: moving from mere lament to action.

A story

Radha in the Bower on the Yamuna's Bank

From the Gita Govinda, the song-poem composed by Jayadeva, we may recall the waiting of Radha.

On the bank of the river Yamuna, in a bower thick with blossoming creepers, Radha waited. Evening grew dim and night began. Cool moonlight spread over the river. She laid a bed of flowers for herself, wove garlands and kept watching the path by which Krishna would come. He had promised to come. Her heart throbbed with expectation.

Time passed. Each time the leaves stirred she turned to see if he was coming. Each time she was disappointed. The night deepened, and Krishna did not come. Her hope melted little by little. Even the ornaments she had put on began to feel a burden, and she took them off and threw them aside.

Then she began to speak with her own heart. 'Why do I sit alone here waiting so long? He is happy elsewhere. Does he know my sorrow? What do I gain by sitting here and grieving over him?' She poured her grief out to her friend, who comforted her.

Jayadeva, who knew how true Radha's state was, set the pain of separation in very beautiful songs. But that separation was not permanent; the poem tells that Krishna later came to Radha, begged her pardon and was united with her.

The scene shows the pain of sitting and waiting, and also the clarity that comes from rising and speaking with one's own heart. The verse says just this.
