Explanation

This verse contains one of the most subtle ideas of the chapter. So far it was said that the heroine's heart runs to the place where the lover lives. Here she reminds it of a truth: when he is within your own heart, to whom do you go? It is a question that changes the place of search. The understanding that he is not outside but within brings her a new calm. It also holds the idea that it is easier to converse with one who is within than to wander searching outside.

'Ullaththaar kaadhalavar' has two senses. The first is plain: because of the abundance of love, his memory stays always in my heart. The second is deeper: true union lies not only in bodily nearness but in oneness of heart. The commentators praise it as a subtle state of love. 'Ulli' is taken by some as 'thinking' and by others as 'intending'; the idea is one. When she asks 'yaaruzhai seyri', 'to whom do you go', it is clear that the distance her heart searches is useless.

This thought is deeply rooted in the Tamil spiritual tradition. The idea that God is not somewhere far away but within the heart appears also in the songs of sages such as Tirumular. In a love relationship it sounds as a way of coping with solitude. Even now the memory of a distant loved one is a strength that sustains us. Those who do not ignore that inner memory and wander outside, but walk with it as a companion, find their sorrow lessened. This is what the verse gently says.

A story

Hanuman's Heart

This is a story widely told among the people in the Ramayana tradition; though it is not in Valmiki's Ramayana, it has a deep place in the minds of devotees.

After Rama defeated Ravana and was crowned in Ayodhya, he gave gifts to all in the royal court. Sita took off a costly pearl necklace from her neck and gave it as a gift to Hanuman, who had helped Rama and her so greatly. Hanuman accepted it humbly. But he began to bite each pearl of the necklace with his teeth, look at it, and throw it away.

Those in the court were bewildered. Some were angry at what he did. 'How can you destroy such a costly necklace?' they asked. Hanuman answered calmly, 'I was looking to see whether Rama and Sita were in these pearls. Anything in which they are not has no value for me.'

Hearing it, some mocked, 'Then are they in your own heart?' At once Hanuman tore open his chest with his hands and showed them. Inside his heart, popular tradition says, shone the sight of Rama and Sita seated side by side. The assembly was amazed and bowed to him. Rama and Sita, moved, embraced him.

The message of the story is very plain: the beloved we seek is not somewhere outside; where love is true, he is always seated within the heart.

When Valluvar's heroine asks her heart, 'The beloved is within you; to whom do you go?', she reminds it of the same truth.
