Explanation

This verse condemns backbiting in the harshest words. It says that death is better than a life lived on slander and lies. The phrase 'aram koorrum aakkam tharum' means that it will give the good fruit the scriptures of dharma speak of. That is, if one gives up such a life and embraces death, the result is merit.

This should not be taken as direct advice to give up life. Valluvar is making an emphatic point: to show that the value of an impure life is very small. To live is precious; but a life built on slander and lies loses the very worth of life. Better to meet loss honestly than to live like that.

There is another angle in 'poydhu uyir vaazhdhal'. A backbiter may use slander of others for his own livelihood: for promotion, for influence in a relationship, for rising by breaking friendships. A life that survives in this way stands on falsehood, and its foundation always trembles.

It is easy to bring this verse into our lives. If we are placed so that we must falsely slander someone to keep a job or to keep influence, the verse says it is better to accept the loss. One who loses honestly lives with his conscience. For Valluvar, life has value only so long as it keeps its honesty.

A story

Harishchandra's Resolve

This is the story of Harishchandra told in the Markandeya Purana and the Devi Bhagavata. Harishchandra was the king of Ayodhya, born in the Ikshvaku line, who lived with the fame of one who never spoke a lie. The sage Vishvamitra wished to test his truthfulness. Harishchandra gave the gift that the sage asked. For it he lost his kingdom and wealth. He came to the point of selling his wife Chandramati and his son Rohitashva. He himself took a post guarding a cremation ground in Kashi.

In that state, tradition says, many came to him with temptations. The master of the cremation ground did not trust him. Some in the town spread false accusations about him. A situation arose in which he could have survived by accusing others. But Harishchandra did not utter a single false word about anyone.

One day Chandramati brought her dead son Rohitashva for cremation. Though he knew it was his own son's body, Harishchandra, in duty as guardian, asked for the fee for the burning. "I have nothing," said Chandramati. When she offered her marriage thread, he recognised his wife. Even then he did not break his word to his master.

Harishchandra was ready to give up his life, not ready to give up his truth. Chandramati did not speak even one false word for her son or husband. At the instant he resolved to end his own life, the gods appeared and praised his truthfulness. Rohitashva was revived, and they regained the lost kingdom.

Harishchandra, who refused falsehood and slander even when it seemed they could save his life, lived out the meaning of the verse: death rather than life by slander and lies.

To reflect on

Has the fear of loss ever tempted me to lie or to cast blame?
