Explanation

Here Valluvar expresses a wonder. The Earth carries on her back the base man who speaks ill behind others' backs; why? Does she bear him only out of regard for dharma? That is, the Earth bears everyone because of dharma and patience. But he wonders why she tolerates even the backbiter walking on her. This is a severe remark that stresses the lowness of the backbiter.

'Vaiyam' means the world, the Earth. In our tradition the Earth is a mother, Bhumi Devi. She is most patient. We plough her, dig her, load her; she bears everything. Yet that she bears the burden of the backbiter is a sign of her boundless patience, he says.

'Porai' has two meanings, burden and patience. It carries a double sense: the patience to bear the load of the backbiter's sin. This wordplay shows Valluvar's subtlety.

The verse raises two thoughts. One is the realisation of how terrible the habit is, since the backbiter is a burden even to the Earth. The other is self-reflection on how much of a burden we are to others. We should not exploit the Earth's patience but live worthy of it. Just as we now realise that the Earth's capacity to bear is not endless, the patience of those around us is not endless either.

A story

Sita and Mother Earth

This is a story told in the Uttara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Having defeated Ravana, Rama returned to Ayodhya with Sita and ruled. Sita's purity had already been proved by the trial of fire. At a time when Sita was with child, Rama one day wished to learn through his spies what the townsfolk were saying. They came and said, "Some in the city are saying that Sita lived in Ravana's house."

The slander was wholly untrue. Sita was faithful to her husband in mind as well. But some in the city spoke of her disparagingly where she was not present. Rama, as a king who had to guard the people's trust, was grieved. At last, tradition says, he made the hard decision to bow to the people's word and send Sita to the forest. Lakshmana left Sita near the hermitage of the sage Valmiki.

At Valmiki's hermitage Sita gave birth to the twins Lava and Kusha and raised them. They grew up and sang the Ramayana with music. Later, during Rama's Ashvamedha sacrifice, they sang in the royal assembly. Realising they were his sons, Rama called Sita to the assembly and asked her to prove her purity once again before all.

Sita stood in the middle of the assembly. "If it is true that in thought, word and deed I have thought of none but Rama, may my mother Bhumi Devi take me into herself," she said. At once the ground split. Bhumi Devi appeared on a throne, seated Sita on her lap and took her away, says the epic.

The story shows an innocent woman's suffering caused by slander. Here the one who bore her was Earth herself, the figure of patience. The image in the verse comes alive in this scene: the Earth bore the burden of those who spoke behind her back, and the pure Sita she took into her embrace.
