Explanation

This is a severe comparison. We know that doing unjust deeds to friends is a grave fault. It is a betrayal of trust. But Valluvar says that worse than this is speaking useless things before many. Why is it said so severely? 'Nayanila' means unjust, unkind, unbeneficial things.

First, harm done to friends affects a few. But speaking uselessly before many affects the time and mood of everyone present. By number, it is harm to more people. If ten minutes of useless talk happen in an assembly, a thousand minutes of a hundred people are wasted.

Second, a wrong done to a friend can be mended by asking forgiveness. But time wasted in vain talk cannot be recovered. It is a loss beyond forgiveness.

Third, this reveals the speaker's mindset. He did not respect others' time; he thought only of his own speech as great. That is an arrogance without respect for others. So it becomes a moral shortcoming as well.

We can remember this when we conduct meetings, deliver lectures or write online. When many trust us and give ear to our speech, it is our duty to respect their time and say only what is useful. A teacher who wastes class time harms many students' learning, and a speaker who wastes an audience's time harms the whole community.

A story

Kandappan's Long Speech

This is an imagined story from the village panchayat of a Tamil village. Drought had dried the village tank and the paddy crop was withering. All the village elders gathered in the temple hall to decide by what method the last rainwater should be diverted into the tank through the canal. About two hundred people were there. Time was precious; the order of irrigation had to be decided before evening.

The chairman opened with, "If anyone has a suggestion on today's decision, speak." Kandappan rose. He was an influential man in the village whom many respected. He began to speak. But he did not speak about the canal. He spoke at length about how the tank was in his father's day, where he bathed as a boy, and how a festival years ago had been.

An hour passed. Those at the meeting lost their calm. Some slept. Some went out. Farmers anxious about their drying fields were pained as they listened to Kandappan. Evening darkened; no decision had been reached.

At that moment the village's old man, Velayudham, rose slowly. "Kandappa, we know your love and wisdom. But in the hour you spoke, two hundred hours of two hundred persons were wasted. In that time we could have dug a canal. For the life of the crop every hour matters," he said. There was no harshness in his words, but there was truth.

Kandappan's face flushed. Realising his fault, he apologised. A quick decision was taken that very day. Next morning the canal digging began. Half the crop was saved; the rest withered because of the water lost in that one hour. The wrong of speaking uselessly before many proved greater than a wrong done to a friend.

Do I count how many people's time my speech demands in a gathering?
