Explanation

This verse may be called the foremost of the moral teachings of India. 'Seruvaarkkum theeya seyyaa vidal': not doing harm even to those who hate us. This, says Valluvar, is the chief of all kinds of wisdom. There are many kinds of knowledge, such as learning, arts and sciences, but higher than them all, in his view, is the wisdom that does not think harm even to enemies.

Why is this the highest wisdom? Because doing good to a friend is easy; showing kindness to those who love us is natural. But to refrain from harming even those who harmed us requires strength of mind, maturity and clear understanding. Revenge is a natural feeling; to transcend it is the summit of wisdom.

What is the basic understanding behind it? That if we meet harm with harm, evil multiplies. Retaliation continues like a chain. If someone breaks it, the chain stops. The one who breaks it is the wisest. Moreover, if we harm our enemies we soil our own minds. They change us.

This is not cowardice. Where evil must be opposed we may oppose it; we may defend ourselves; we may seek justice. But we must not do harm out of hatred or the aim of revenge. That is what is being said here.

There will be moments in our lives when we have to forgive someone who harmed us. Let us remember this verse then.

A story

Draupadi's Compassion

This is the episode of Draupadi and Ashvatthama told in the Sauptika Parva of the Mahabharata. As the Kurukshetra war was ending, Duryodhana lay fallen with a broken thigh. That night Drona's son Ashvatthama entered the Pandava camp and killed Draupadi's five sons, Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandi and others as they slept. This was wholly against the rules of war; it was the summit of evil.

Hearing the sad news in the morning, Draupadi was shattered. She had lost all five of her sons. Bhima, boiling with anger, went in search of Ashvatthama. Arjuna and Krishna went along. Near Vyasa's hermitage they found Ashvatthama. He shot the Brahmashira weapon. Arjuna also released his weapon against it. Fearing the world would be destroyed, Vyasa and Narada intervened. Arjuna withdrew his weapon; Ashvatthama could not.

Arjuna bound Ashvatthama and brought him to Draupadi in the camp. He had killed her children; yet Draupadi neither wailed at the sight of him nor asked that he be killed. Seeing the rope that bound him, she said, "Release him. He is a teacher's son. His mother Kripi is still alive. She must not shed tears like me, having lost her son." In the midst of her own grief she showed compassion for the enemy's mother.

Bhima opposed this. Krishna also said he should be punished. But in the end, without killing Ashvatthama, they took the jewel from his forehead and let him wander under an unending curse. The mercy Draupadi sought gave him his life.

Draupadi's compassion, which did not think harm even to the one who wronged her cruelly, stands as the best witness to the verse 'the foremost of all wisdom'.

If I were given the chance to punish one who wronged me, what would I do?
