Explanation

'Marandhum piran kedu soozharka' is a very subtle counsel. Setting aside deliberately doing harm, Valluvar says one must not think harm to another even by oversight. It carries the warning that even an evil thought that arises for a moment will grow. A thought is the seed of an act. We must not give that seed room to sprout.

The second half of the verse is 'soozhin aram soozhum soozhndhavan kedu': if we plan another's ruin, dharma itself will plan our ruin. Here dharma is personified as a force, a power. We may think dharma is silent; but it is awake. The idea is that in the very moment we think ill of someone, dharma begins to think ill of us.

Our tradition has many stories to illustrate this. The proverb 'He who digs a pit will fall into it himself' says the same. We see in many places that people are caught in the trap they set for others. Valluvar believes this is not coincidence but the natural working of dharma.

There is truth in this from a psychological view as well. One who plots another's ruin fills his mind with fear, suspicion and enmity. His peace is broken. Sleep is spoilt. He himself is caught in the prison of his own mind. So the first punishment for the schemer begins in his own mind.

Daily we should watch our thoughts. When thoughts of hatred or envy against others arise, we should push them aside at once.

A story

The House of Lac and Purochana

This is the lac-house episode told in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. After Pandu's passing, Kunti and the Pandavas grew up in Hastinapura. As Yudhishthira's fame and Bhima's strength grew among the people, Duryodhana burned with envy. With his uncle Shakuni and friend Karna he plotted to remove the Pandavas. Deceiving Dhritarashtra, he had the Pandavas sent to a town called Varanavata.

There, an engineer named Purochana built a handsome mansion for them to stay. It was made of lac, ghee, flax, bamboo and other quickly flammable materials. The plot was to burn the Pandavas as they slept at midnight. Purochana himself was to set the fire.

Vidura learned of this plot beforehand. He told Yudhishthira in words he alone would understand and sent him off. He also sent a miner. The Pandavas secretly made a tunnel to escape from the mansion.

One day Kunti arranged a charity feast. A Nishada woman and her five sons ate there and fell asleep. That night Bhima set fire to the mansion; Purochana was sleeping inside. The Pandavas escaped through the tunnel. Purochana and those six burned in the fire.

The news that reached Duryodhana was that the Pandavas had burned to death. But in truth the trap set by the plotter caught his own agent. The Pandavas not only escaped; thereafter, under dharma's protection, they grew, married Draupadi and gained great military power.

This was an episode in which dharma itself planned the ruin of Duryodhana, who planned the ruin of others. It stands as the first chapter of 'soozhin aram soozhum soozhndhavan kedu'.
