Explanation

This verse divides enmity into two kinds. One is the enmity of others; the other is the enmity born of one's own deeds (vinaippagai). There are many ways to escape the enmity of others. One can move away from the enemy, make friends, seek help, use tactics, or run far away. But from the enemy called evil deeds there is no escape anywhere. It was born with us; it walks with us.

The phrase 'veeyaadhu pinsendru adum' paints a fearsome picture. However far one runs, it follows without leaving off and strikes when the time comes. There is no room for the word 'escape' in it. The basis of the law of karma is that the doer of a deed must experience its result.

Others' enmity is outside; we can face it. The enmity of evil deeds is inside us. It dwells in our conscience, memories and the consequences of our acts. The only way to avoid it is not to create it.

There is another side that comforts us: the good deeds we do also follow us in the same way. Just as we fear the enmity of evil deeds, we can trust the friendship of good deeds. That gives encouragement to do good.

So our elders said, 'oozhvinai uruthu vandhootum': the deed done earlier ripens and comes by itself to give its fruit. One who understands this lives carefully from today.

A story

Hiranyakashipu's Boon and Narasimha

This is the story of Hiranyakashipu told in the seventh skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. Hiranyakashipu was an asura king who bore great enmity toward Vishnu, who as the Varaha avatar had killed his brother Hiranyaksha. On Mount Mandara he did severe penance and pleased Brahma. When Brahma told him to ask a boon, Hiranyakashipu asked for immortality. Told that it was not possible, he cleverly asked for another boon.

"May I not be killed by any man or beast. May I not die inside or outside a house. May I not die by day or night. May I not die on the ground or in the sky. May I not die by any weapon," he said. Brahma granted it. By this boon he thought he had conquered all enemies.

After the boon Hiranyakashipu subdued and ruled the three worlds. He tormented the gods and sages. He could not bear his son Prahlada worshipping Vishnu. He had the child trampled by elephants, gave him poison, pushed him off a mountain, and cast him into fire. But each time Prahlada escaped by the grace of Vishnu.

At last, one evening, Hiranyakashipu asked Prahlada in rage, "Where is your Vishnu? Is he in this pillar?" and kicked the pillar. The pillar split and from it came forth Narasimha, half man and half lion. He was neither man nor beast. It was twilight, neither day nor night. He sat on the threshold, neither inside nor outside. He placed Hiranyakashipu on his lap, neither ground nor sky. He tore open his belly with his claws, no weapon.

He who had gained power to escape all other enemies could not escape the enemy called his own evil. The end of Hiranyakashipu stands as witness to the verse: all other enemies may be escaped, but the enmity of deeds follows without leaving off and strikes.
