Explanation

This verse speaks of two purities. One is the purity of the mind, the other the purity of action. The mind is where thought arises; action is its expression. Life will be straight only if both are straight. Valluvar says that what supports both is the purity of one's company. Most commentators read 'thoovaa' as 'as a support' (a staff or prop), while a few connect it to the word for purity itself.

The idea of support is important. Pure company does not manufacture our purity; it holds it up. A creeper needs a stake to climb, and a good thought needs good company in order to grow. A creeper without a stake sprawls on the ground and is trampled. With support it climbs high.

In practice, suppose someone wishes to be honest. If everyone around him takes shortcuts, his honesty will be tested every single day. If he has honest friends, the same effort becomes lighter. In the same way, good deeds also need companions who will put their hands to them. So whoever wants purity should first look for the fellowship that can hold it up.

This verse also warns us against a lonely sort of virtue. Even strong characters tire when they walk uphill alone. By joining others who share their aims, they conserve their strength and are less likely to fall.

A story

Prahlada in the Schoolroom

From the Bhagavata Purana: Hiranyakashipu was king of the asuras. He placed his son Prahlada in a gurukula where the teachers Shanda and Amarka taught the asura boys. They taught lessons suited to the rule and the pride of Hiranyakashipu. But in Prahlada's heart there was an unshakeable devotion to Vishnu.

One day the teachers left the school to attend to household work and the boys gathered to play. Prahlada called them affectionately and began to speak: "Friends, this human birth is rare. Do not spend it merely in play; spend it in remembering the Lord."

There was no harshness in his words, only sweetness and clarity. He had not come to correct them; he had come to share his joy. The asura boys were first astonished, then listened quietly. He opened before them a world they had never heard of. Some came and sat near him. They too began to find joy in remembering God.

When the teachers returned, they were frightened by the new light in the boys' eyes. The news went to Hiranyakashipu, who flew into a rage. But no fear could shake Prahlada's resolve. He held to the remembrance of the Lord, which had been his true companion.

Here we see purity working in both directions. Prahlada had a pure heart, supported by the teachings of Narada and by the memory of God. That same purity cleansed the hearts and deeds of his companions. The one who seeks good company may one day become the one who creates it.

In the days that followed, however many threats Hiranyakashipu made, Prahlada did not tremble. One may say that the memory of sharing his faith with his friends in childhood kept giving him strength. To share purity also strengthens one's own.
