Explanation

This verse places two kinds of people side by side: the person of true worth and the person of small mind. Worth here does not come from wealth or rank. It is the loftiness of a heart that has good conduct and a wide vision. Such people feel fear when they meet petty company. The fear is not cowardice but the caution one feels near a fire. They know how easily a bad circle leaves its mark.

The small-minded behave in the opposite way. They feel no fear of the same circle; they take it up as their own family. The reason is that within it their faults meet no criticism, only approval and applause. People feel a soothing comfort on meeting others who think as they do, and that comfort keeps drawing them back.

We can see this in everyday life. A schoolboy hurries without fear towards a group that mocks studies, because their laughter feels welcoming. A more discerning boy senses the danger hidden behind that laughter and steps away. So the company we fear and the company we feel at home in are like a mirror, showing us whether our nature is great or small.

The same may be seen close to home. When parents notice with whom their child plays, it is not out of suspicion but out of love. A child's mind is like clay, and no one can tell whose hand will shape it. In the same way, even mature people do well to weigh their circle from time to time.

Wariness is a form of self-knowledge: a person who knows his own weak points knows which gatherings could pull at them.

A story

Vibhishana Leaves Lanka

From the Ramayana: After Ravana had imprisoned Sita, the court of Lanka talked of nothing but war. Many in the assembly said only the words that pleased the king. "Rama is only a man. Before your glory, what is he?" they flattered, and Ravana's pride grew with every compliment.

Only his younger brother Vibhishana stood differently in that hall. He honoured dharma, and the noise of the court frightened him. He rose humbly and pleaded again and again: "Brother, to hold another man's wife captive is the road to ruin. Return Sita with honour to Rama. That alone will save our house."

To a king used to flattery, this truth tasted bitter. Ravana grew angry and spoke harshly to his brother. The companions in the court laughed and nodded approval. In that instant Vibhishana understood that if he stayed among them he must either lose his conscience or perish together with his clan. He looked at that assembly, full of petty minds, with dread.

That night he thought for a long time. The face of his mother, his brother's old affection and the palaces of Lanka all rose in his memory. Yet the voice of dharma sounded louder than all of them.

He left Lanka with a few trusted ministers, crossed the sea and reached the camp of Rama. Sugriva and other leaders of the vanaras looked at him with suspicion. But Rama, learning that he had come seeking refuge, received him with affection. In later days the kingdom of Lanka was given to Vibhishana, who stood by dharma.

Though his brother's court was as close to him as family, Vibhishana feared its smallness. That fear gave him both life and honour. It is an example of how shrinking from petty company can itself be the mark of greatness.
