Explanation

This is the last verse of the chapter. Valluvar makes us feel how great a loss it is to give up the friendship of the good, by a comparison. To seek the enmity of many is a great evil. But to give up the company of the good is ten times worse still.

Why so? An enemy may harm a man from outside, but so long as the company of the good remains, he gains the strength and the guidance to face that harm. If he leaves the good, that protection goes. Then the enemy's attack becomes easy.

'Paththaduththa' is a reckoning of ten times. It is not an exact number but a usage showing a very great measure. Commentators take it simply as meaning great excess.

'Thodarkai' can mean friendship, connection and support. To lose, through a small quarrel or pride, a good man one has kept company with all one's life is a great mistake. The depth is that however angry one gets, one must not leave the bond of the good.

In life today, those who pushed away a good friend or guide out of wrong pride later grieve over it. The loss of one good man strikes deeper than the opposition of many.

Thus the message the whole chapter stresses ends here: join the good, keep the good, and never for any reason cast out the good.

A story

Ravana and Vibhishana

This incident is told in the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Ravana, king of Lanka, had carried off Sita and held her captive in his Ashoka grove. When Rama approached Lanka with the vanara army, Ravana called his ministers and held a council.

All spoke words to please Ravana. 'We shall win easily,' they said. But Ravana's younger brother Vibhishana was a man of knowledge and dharma. He rose boldly and, with humility and firmness, advised: 'Brother, return Sita to Rama. He is no ordinary man. Lanka will be destroyed by this.'

Hearing these words, Ravana was filled with fierce anger. He spoke contemptuously to his own brother. 'You are on the enemy's side,' he abused him and drove him out of the assembly. Some traditions say he even kicked his brother.

Vibhishana left Lanka with a few trusted supporters and took refuge with Rama. Rama received him lovingly. It is said that later he helped Rama's victory by telling the secrets of Lanka.

Ravana gave up the good man who advised him. It is true he had the enmity of many; yet the greater loss was that he himself drove away a good man. Once that good man joined the other side, Ravana's position tilted.

In the end Ravana fell in the war. Though his evils were many, the beginning of his fall was the casting out of the good.

This is the lesson of the verse: to give up the company of the good is ten times worse than the enmity of many.
