Explanation

There are many who speak sweetly, but very few who, on seeing a fault, rebuke it. Valluvar says no one has the power to ruin a man who has such rebuking helpers. This verse is considered the high point of the chapter.

The word 'idikkum' is very strong. To 'idi' is to break down; it means pointing out so firmly that a wrong thought is shattered. Praise is like an intoxicating drug; rebuke is like a bitter medicine. As bitterness does good to the body, rebuke does good to the leader.

Commentators give two senses for 'aalvaarai'. One is the one who has such helpers. The other is the one who brings them under his authority and uses them for the right path. In both there is the implication that the king has the temper to hear and accept their rebuke.

Even the question 'kedukkum thakaimaiyavar yaar' is a forceful denial. No enemy and no scheme can bring him down, because he always keeps open the chance of mending his faults.

It is not easy to bear the one who rebukes, because it touches our pride. Yet he who has a mind to listen like that is truly strong.

In life today too, to honour and cherish the friend, teacher or family member who tells us our fault without hesitation protects us. To be surrounded only by those who speak sweet words is dangerous.

A story

Draupadi, Bhima and Yudhishthira

This conversation occurs in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Having lost at dice, the Pandavas lived twelve years in the forest. One day an incident occurred in Dvaitavana. Hearing news of the prosperity of Duryodhana, Draupadi was greatly grieved.

She spoke directly to Yudhishthira. 'King, I know you stand on the path of dharma. But how is it just that those who did cruelty are well while the one who stands on dharma suffers? Your patience alone is not enough; something must be done,' she asked sharply. She did not hide the pain of her humiliation.

Bhima joined her. 'Brother, time is passing. In the name of truth we are losing our right. This is the time to fight the enemies,' he said. His words were harsh. Anger and grief were mixed in his speech.

Yudhishthira heard these calmly. He did not condemn them, and he did not grow angry. 'There is truth in what you say. But I cannot break the word I gave. We must wait until the proper time,' he explained his position. Yet their words warned him. Later he also arranged for Arjuna to go to Indra's world to obtain divine weapons, and for the others to be ready.

Helpers who rebuked kept the king alert to his duty. Yudhishthira bore their harsh words and understood their inner meaning. So his resolve did not break.

After thirteen years they fought for their right and won. No one could ruin Yudhishthira, who had helpers that rebuked him and who patiently heard their word.

To reflect on

When someone close to you speaks a hard truth, do you listen for the truth in it or for the offence?
