Explanation

This is the first verse of the chapter. To the question of whom one should take as support, Valluvar gives two marks here: one who knows dharma and one who is mature in knowledge. That is, one who has understood the way of dharma and has grown ripe through experience is fit to be a leader's support.

The word 'mooththa' should not be taken to mean only older in years. Parimelazhagar explains it as ripened in knowledge. A young person who is ripe in knowledge is included. So the measure here is maturity of knowledge rather than age.

In 'thiranarindhu therndhu kolal' lies Valluvar's caution. Even taking great men as support is an act to be done after examination. Not everyone who is famous is great. A person's conduct and knowledge must be understood through his deeds, and only then should friendship be formed.

In life today, when we look for a guide in study or in work, we should look not at age or position but at honesty and experience. The friendship of such a person guides us all our life. A friendship with such a great man is a gain that deepens over years, because his steady word checks hasty decisions made in anger or in joy.

A story

Yudhishthira Learns Dharma from Bhishma

This incident occurs in the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata. The war of Kurukshetra was over. Though he had won, Yudhishthira's mind found no peace. The grief that countless kinsmen and teachers had died in the war tormented him. He hesitated to take up the kingdom.

Then Krishna said to him, 'Go to Bhishma, who lies on his bed of arrows. He knows dharma completely. Ask him.' Yudhishthira went to Kurukshetra with his brothers and Krishna.

Bhishma lay on the bed of arrows, waiting for the northern course of the sun to give up his life. Yudhishthira bowed at his feet. Then for many days he put to him many questions: the duties of a king, the way to rule a country, how the mind recovers from grief. Bhishma answered patiently. These conversations are what tradition hands down as the long sections called the Shanti Parva and Anushasana Parva.

What should be noticed here is the way Yudhishthira sought counsel with care. He was a king and a victor. Yet he accepted that there was something he did not know. And he was careful about whom to ask. He understood that Bhishma was one who knew dharma and was ripe in life.

After Bhishma had taught him dharma, his mind grew clear. He accepted the kingdom. Bhishma's wisdom became the foundation of his rule.

The verse says just this: one who examines, chooses and befriends an elder who knows dharma does not lose his way even in sorrow.
