Explanation

This verse speaks of the safety of living in the company of the good. 'Thakkaar' are those with dharma, knowledge and worth. Valluvar states firmly that to the man who can behave as one of their kind, as a member of their group, the enemies can do no harm of any sort.

In 'inaththanaay thaan ozhuka vallaanai' the word 'vallaan', one who is able, deserves notice. It is not enough to join the company of the good; one needs the quality to live in harmony with them. For that, humility, patience and honesty are needed. So Valluvar treats it as a skill.

Commentators explain how the company of the good protects a man. First, with their knowledge they sense danger beforehand and warn him. Second, when danger comes, they stand by him. Third, since those around him are good, even his enemies find no place to slander him.

Parimelazhagar explains 'setraar seyakkidanthathu il' as meaning that not a single act remains that the enemies could do. Others say the enemies' acts will be fruitless. The idea in both is the same: the company of the good is a fortress for a man.

In life today too, the kind of people one keeps company with decides one's safety and one's name. One who lives within a circle of friends of good character cannot easily be brought down.

So avoiding bad company and seeking good company is a way of protecting oneself. This verse reminds us that the choice of friends is the first step of safety. So whoever wants strength must choose his surroundings as well as grow his power.

A story

Prahlada Among the Good

The story of Prahlada is told at length in the Bhagavata Purana. Hiranyakashipu, king of the asuras, hated Vishnu. His son Prahlada was a devotee of Vishnu from childhood. According to the Bhagavata, it is said that Prahlada heard the teachings of the sage Narada even while in his mother's womb. That planted the word of the good deeply in his heart.

Even while studying with the asura boys, Prahlada told them the truth he knew. 'Let us seek God in our youth; time passes in vain,' he said to his friends. Many of them accepted his word. So he became not a lone man but the leader of a company of the good.

Hiranyakashipu grew angry at this. He ordered his own son to be killed. They had Prahlada trampled by elephants, fed him poison, threw him into fire, and cast him from a mountain top. But each time, says the story, he was protected. No act of the enemy could bring him down.

At last Hiranyakashipu asked, 'Where is your God? In this pillar?' and broke the pillar. Out of it Vishnu appeared as Narasimha and destroyed Hiranyakashipu. Prahlada was saved. Later he ruled on the path of dharma.

As the verse says, the enemy could not defeat in any way Prahlada, who could live within the company of the good. That company may seem small outwardly, but its strength is very great.

The story shows that one who stands joined with goodness even in the midst of evil does not fall. Prahlada's firmness was made strong by the support of the good.

The lesson is that however great the enmity, one who walks in union with the worthy cannot be defeated.
