Explanation

The first half of the verse says that goodness of mind is wealth for living beings. 'Aakkam' here is not merely material wealth; it means growth and fulfilment. If the mind is good, whatever a person gains will be put to good use. If one has great riches but a crooked mind, those riches only become a cause of sorrow.

The second half says that goodness of company brings every kind of fame. Fame does not come only from one's solitary effort. Deeds done together with good people, the testimony of good people, and the opportunities that open in their shade all together give a person honour. The phrase 'ellaap pugazhum', 'all fame', suggests fame of every kind and in every place.

The two are linked. A man of good mind seeks good company, and good company increases his goodness. Today a person who works honestly in a team gives the whole team a good name, and the team's good name in turn raises him before others. This is how the cycle of goodness continues.

It is worth noticing that Valluvar names mind first and company second. The inner treasure is the root; the outer fellowship is the branch that carries the fruit into public view. A person who tends only the branch while neglecting the root will find his fame short-lived.

A story

Guha the Boatman

From the Ramayana: When Rama set out for his exile, he came with Sita and Lakshmana to the banks of the Ganga. There, at a place called Shringaverapura, lived Guha, chief of the hunters. He was a boatman, raised in the forest, with little schooling. But his heart was full of pure love. When he heard that Rama was coming, he ran to meet him carrying honey and fish as an offering.

Seeing Rama, Guha bowed with tears in his eyes. "This is your own land. Stay here in my hut," he begged. Rama embraced him with affection. Tradition says that he told Guha, "You are like a brother to me; with you we have become five."

Guha already had goodness in his mind. But his fellowship with Rama carried his name across the world. The name of a boatman who lived by fishing in the forest lives on in every Ramayana.

Next morning Guha ferried Rama, Sita and Lakshmana across the Ganga in his boat. Later, when Bharata came with an army, Guha was at first suspicious. But when he saw Bharata's grief, his heart melted and he guided him onward.

The single night Rama spent on the far bank of the Ganga became the whole meaning of Guha's life. The story says that while Rama slept on a bed of leaves, Guha stood guard all night with his bow.

Guha never sat in any royal court, and he composed no book. Yet nobody can match the fame he received. His wealth was love, and his companion was Rama, an embodiment of the Lord. These two made him known to the world.

Goodness of mind was Guha's wealth, and the goodness of his company with Rama was his fame. Because both joined together, the name of a simple boatman is still spoken after ages.
