Explanation

In this verse Valluvar divides the reckoning to be made before an undertaking into four parts. The first is 'vinaivali', the nature of the task itself, its difficulty and the power it demands. The second is 'thanvali', one's own resources of body, mind, wealth and spirit. The third is 'maatraan vali', the strength of the opponent. The fourth is 'thunaivali', the strength of helpers, friends and allies on both sides.

Each of these must be viewed separately. The task may be easy, yet we may lack the skill for it. We may have the skill, yet the opponent may be stronger than we are. The opponent may be strong, yet our allies may be stronger still. To judge by only one of them is to risk error. Setting them all against one another is what Valluvar means by 'thookkich cheyal', acting after weighing.

To weigh is to place on a balance with two pans. On one side are our strength and our allies; on the other the difficulty of the task and the strength of the opponent. If our side is heavier we may proceed. If not, we should begin only after increasing our strength, gathering allies or finding another way.

This is not advice for warrior kings alone. A student may reckon before an examination the difficulty of the syllabus, his preparation, the standing of his rivals and the help of his teachers. An entrepreneur entering a new market can look at the same four. Even when a large expense arises in a household, one can weigh its size, the income, other needs and the help of relatives. Those who do so meet fewer unexpected defeats.

A story

Yudhishthira Reckons the Armies

From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva): The Pandavas had completed thirteen years of exile and incognito life, and now asked for their rightful share of the kingdom. Though Krishna went as envoy, Duryodhana refused even a needle-point of land. War became unavoidable. Yudhishthira stayed awake all night thinking about the kind of war that was coming.

He did not hurry. He called his brothers, Krishna, King Virata and Drupada, and held a council. "Before we go to war we must weigh our strength and theirs," he said. First the Kaurava army was discussed. Duryodhana had eleven akshauhinis, and great warriors such as Bhishma, Drona, Karna and Kripa stood with him.

Then they reckoned their own side. The Pandavas had only seven akshauhinis. In number they were fewer. But Arjuna's skill with the bow, Bhima's strength and the capacities of Nakula and Sahadeva were noted. The question of whom to appoint commander came up. Arjuna recommended Dhrishtadyumna, son of Drupada, who according to tradition was born to slay Drona. Yudhishthira accepted.

When they spoke of the strength of allies, Krishna's place was discussed. Krishna would not take up arms in the war, but he would be Arjuna's charioteer and give counsel. Yudhishthira considered that the strength of such counsel was greater than the number of any army.

Only after all this reckoning did Yudhishthira turn to Krishna and say, "We may prepare for war." Turning to his brothers he said, "The numbers are not in our favour, but our purpose is clear and our ally is Krishna."

Because they measured the difficulty of the task, their own strength, the enemy's strength and their allies' strength before the war began, and planned well, the Pandavas could remain firm in the midst of destruction. The victory came with huge losses, but without such preparation they would have been scattered on the first day.
