Explanation

This verse puts before us a simple and unforgettable picture. How light a peacock's feather is! Pick up one, and you hardly feel it in your hand. Place it on a cart and the cart bears no burden. But load them up like a hill, and the cart's axle will snap. The feather is not a big thing here; it is the excess in number that does the harm. 'Saalamigaththup peyin' refers to loading beyond measure.

The depth of the image is that danger does not always come from something large. Small things piling up can also cause a breakdown. When a household's small expenses add up beyond its income, it becomes debt. Each small responsibility a person accepts looks easy by itself; together they become mental strain.

A cartman knows how much weight his cart can bear. In the same way each of us should know the carrying capacity of our own life-cart. Some carts can carry grain, others only feathers. Everyone has a measure.

Today we load ourselves with work, study, social duties and social media. Each is a 'small thing', yet their combined weight risks breaking our axle. The ability to say 'no' is also a part of knowing one's strength. The kindest thing a wise person does for himself and those who depend on him is to notice the load building up before the creak of the axle begins.

A story

The Peacock-Feather Cart of Palani

For the Thaipusam festival thousands of devotees go to Palani carrying peacock-feather kavadis. It is the devotees' belief that the peacock feather is most dear to Lord Murugan. So Kandasamy, a feather merchant at the foot of the hill, every year loaded hundreds of bundles of feathers on a cart and carried them to sell.

One year Kandasamy thought, "How light a feather is! If I load three times the usual number on one cart, I will save the cost of making two trips." His old bullock-cart driver Muthu was worried: "Sir, will the axle bear it?" Kandasamy laughed. "It is only a feather, Muthu! What weight can it be?"

The cart was loaded. The bundles of feathers rose like a hill on top of it. Looking from below, the cart could hardly be seen. The bullocks strained and the cart moved. But after a few miles there was a small dip in the road. At the moment the wheel went down and up, the axle snapped with a loud crack.

The bundles of feathers scattered over the road. Some blew into the fields. Muthu anxiously gathered them. Many feathers were broken; those that lay in the dust were of no use. Only three days remained before the festival. It took time to make a new axle. There was a heavy loss in the business.

That night Kandasamy sat by the roadside thinking. "Because the feather is light, I thought it was little. But I forgot that in great numbers it becomes heavy," he told himself. Before Murugan he prayed sincerely, "From now on I will load only what my cart can bear."

From the next year he hired two carts and loaded a moderate weight on each. The cost rose slightly, but there was no loss. His business grew steadily. He never forgot all his life that even a small thing causes harm when it exceeds measure.
