Explanation

The chapter on knowing the time spoke of patience; this verse speaks of its opposite side, speed. 'Eydharku ariyadhu' is a rare opportunity, difficult to attain. When it comes, says Valluvar, 'annilaiye', at that very moment, do the deed that is rare to do. Without hesitation, without postponing, use the chance at once.

Having told us earlier to wait, here he speaks of the moment when waiting ends. If a man who has long waited for a season hesitates when it finally comes, his entire period of waiting is wasted. It is not certain that a rare chance will come again. At the moment of that opportunity it becomes easy to do the rare deed; once that moment passes, the same deed becomes rare again.

Note also 'seydharku ariya seyal', the deed that is hard to do. There are some things that cannot be done at ordinary times. When the proper chance arises they become possible. It is wise then to do them without asking hesitantly, "Can this be done?" A deed that looks hard becomes easy in the light of opportunity.

In today's life the meaning is very plain. A chance to pass an examination, a good job offer, a moment to apologise in a good relationship, a time to give a great help: all are rare opportunities. Those who see them and use them boldly rise in life. Those who hesitate grieve, "If only I had done it that day."

Patience and promptness are thus two halves of one skill: the first prepares, the second acts.

A story

Arjuna and the Eye of the Fish

From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva): Drupada, king of Panchala, announced a svayamvara for his daughter Draupadi. A great bow was placed in the hall. High above hung a revolving golden fish as the target, and beneath it a tank of water. Looking only at the fish's reflection in the water, one had to pierce the eye of the fish with five arrows from that bow. The one who did so would win Draupadi.

Kings came from many lands. Duryodhana, Shishupala, Jarasandha and many others rose one by one to lift the bow. Many could not even move it. Some bent the bow but could not string the last loop and failed. Disappointment spread through the hall. Some traditions say that Karna took the bow, but Draupadi stopped him.

Then Arjuna, disguised as a brahmin, rose quietly. The kings in the hall laughed. "Will a brahmin do this?" they said. But Arjuna was not shaken. He realised that this was a rare chance. Where many had failed, he resolved not to miss it.

He concentrated his mind, touched the bow in reverence, bent it easily and strung it. He gazed at the reflection of the fish in the water. Without looking up, he shot an arrow looking in the water. The arrow flew and pierced the eye of the fish. The fish fell. The hall rang with cheers.

Draupadi walked toward Arjuna with a garland of flowers. Because he used his ability at that very moment when the rare opportunity came, Arjuna achieved what others could not. This event also became the way for the Pandavas to gain the support of Panchala once more.

Arjuna had waited for an opportunity; when it came, he acted without hesitation. It is a witness that those who act knowing the time will meet rare chances, and those who do the rare deed at that moment rise in life.
