Explanation

This is considered one of the most strategic counsels in the Kural. 'Serunarai kaanin sumakka' means: on seeing enemies, behave as though bearing them on your shoulder. To carry here includes acting humbly, appearing to obey their words, and not provoking their hatred. The aim is to let them think themselves superior.

'Iruvarai kaanin kizhakkaam thalai' is the second part. 'Iruvarai' is the time when their end is near. Then the head will 'kizhakkaam', fall downward. Some say it also suggests being dropped from the shoulder to the ground. A man who has long carried a load throws it down easily when the right place comes.

This strategy may look deceitful. But Valluvar presents it as the practical shrewdness of the weaker against the stronger in politics. In a weak position, to confront the enemy directly brings only destruction. To bow, build strength and wait patiently until the right time is the path to success.

In life today this should be applied with care. In a position of weakness it is wise not to make enemies of the strong but to behave graciously. Humility is not lowliness; it is preparation for a good moment. But one must not give up honesty and walk wrong paths; so the strategy must remain within dharma. The deeper lesson is that open defiance is not the only form of courage; sometimes courage wears the quiet clothes of patience.

A story

Hanuman in Ravana's Court

From the Ramayana (Sundara Kanda): After seeing Sita, Hanuman began to devastate the trees and mansions of the Ashoka grove in Lanka. Ravana's soldiers tried to seize him and failed. Many, including Akshakumara, were slain by him. At last Ravana's son Indrajit used the Brahmastra.

The Brahmastra did not stupefy Hanuman. By a boon from Brahma, he had to endure the effect of that weapon for only a moment. But Hanuman did not show it at once. He saw this as a chance to meet Ravana and learn the strength of the king and the state of Lanka. So he pretended to be bound by the missile.

The rakshasas tied him with ropes and dragged him along. He walked quietly and humbly. Hanuman was made to stand in Ravana's court. The rakshasas mocked and laughed at him. Ravana questioned him haughtily. With great courage and calm, Hanuman declared himself the messenger of Rama. He advised Ravana: "Return Sita to Rama; that will be good for you and for your clan."

In anger Ravana ordered, "Set fire to this monkey's tail!" The rakshasas wrapped cloth and oil around Hanuman's tail and lit it. Even then Hanuman stayed patient. They dragged him through the streets of the city and paraded him for their amusement. Hanuman carefully fixed in his mind the streets, mansions and fortifications of the city.

When the proper moment came, Hanuman broke his bonds, shrinking his body to slip out of the ropes. Then, with his burning tail, he set the mansions of Lanka ablaze one by one, sparing only the Ashoka grove where Sita was. Then he quenched his tail in the sea and leapt back to Rama.

Hanuman, who seemed to carry his enemies in submission, learnt their whole city and finished his task at the right moment: a picture of the verse.
