Explanation

In this verse Valluvar pictures kannottam as a beautiful woman. 'Kaarigai' means both beauty and a beautiful woman. Beauty delights the eye; kannottam delights the heart. It is no exaggeration to say that the world goes on because of it. Families and societies endure because people are willing to look at one another a little kindly and to make a little room. If everyone clutched only his own right, every place from the market to the home would become a battlefield.

The word 'kazhiperum' shows the measure of the beauty as beyond limits. Other beauties fade with time, but this one glows more as time passes. Bodily beauty goes with youth; the beauty of kindness grows with age. In the phrase 'unmaiyaan undu' the repeated sense of being points to continuing and going on. Some commentators read it as 'it endures because it exists', others as 'the world functions because it exists'.

We see it in daily life: the driver who stops to give way, the young man who lets an elder go ahead in the queue, the manager who asks the reason from an employee who erred. All are ambassadors of that beautiful quality. Laws and contracts may put the world in order, but it is kannottam that makes it fit to live in.

A story

Krishna Welcomes Kuchela

From the Bhagavata Purana: Krishna, seated as king in Dwaraka, had a close friend from his days at the gurukulam of Sage Sandipani. His name was Sudama, later called Kuchela. Kuchela was a poor Brahmin who lived in want. His wife Susheela begged him, 'They say your friend Krishna is king of Dwaraka; go to him and ask for help.'

Kuchela hesitated. He had nothing to give. His wife borrowed a little flattened rice from the neighbouring houses and tied it in a torn cloth. Taking that as a gift, Kuchela went to Dwaraka. Standing at the gate of the vast palace, he shrank, wondering whether he could enter. His clothes were torn and his body thin.

But when news of his arrival reached Krishna, the king ran from his silk-draped seat. With tears in his eyes he embraced his friend. He washed his feet with his own hands. Rukmini fanned him. The king seated his friend on his own throne. He recalled the days at the gurukulam when they went to gather firewood in the forest and were caught in the rain.

Krishna spotted the flattened rice Kuchela was hiding. 'What have you brought, friend?' he asked with the right of a friend, took it and ate a handful. 'This is the best feast for me,' he said. Kuchela in his shame never spoke of his poverty, and Krishna never asked him. After staying a few days Kuchela returned home.

Where his hut had been stood a beautiful mansion. Susheela welcomed him with jewels and silk. Krishna, without being asked, had understood his friend's need and given. Even in giving, he did not show that he had given.

The tenderness and welcome that the king showed here is a beautiful form of kannottam. When one high in rank and wealth honoured a humble friend with love, that bond became a tale the world still praises.

To reflect on

If a humble friend stood at my door, how would I receive him?
