Benignity · Kannottam

This chapter teaches that a kind and considerate glance is the beauty that keeps the world running, and that people without it are no better than trees or a burden on the earth. Valluvar shows that the person who can be gracious without failing in duty, and who bears even with those who have wronged him, holds the highest quality.

Introduction

This chapter in the Arasiyal section of the Porutpaal concerns the quality called kannottam. 'Kan' means the eye, and 'ottam' means running, the eye running with kindness towards another. Compassion for another's situation, a pleasant regard on the face, and a patience that does not turn harsh at once even towards an offender, are all contained in this word. The preceding chapter showed the harm of a rule built on fear; this one shows the beauty of a rule full of tenderness.

At the start of the chapter Valluvar pictures kannottam as 'kazhiperung kaarigai', an exceedingly beautiful woman, and says the world goes on because she exists. The following verses pile up comparisons for those without that quality: a song without music, an eye that is a sore, a tree standing in the ground, a person who cannot see. Each simile shows the emptiness of lacking kannottam from a different angle. The eighth verse then adds a caution: kannottam is not giving up duty; the excellence lies in being kind without letting duty be damaged. The ninth praises patience even towards those who have done harm. The tenth shows the peak of refinement in the grace of eating without protest what a friend has served even when one knows it to be poison.

The chapter can be taken as a lesson not only for kings but for everyone. The measure of kannottam is whether, when someone speaks, we truly look at his face and understand his difficulty. It applies to a ruler, an official, a teacher, a doctor and a shopkeeper. The consideration of those with authority supports many lives.

At the same time Valluvar makes clear that in the name of kannottam one must not tolerate injustice. That is why he sets the limit 'karumam sidhaiyaamal', without harming duty. Only when kindness and duty stand together does this quality become complete.

Its place in the Arasiyal sequence is also worth noticing. The chapter on the greatness of a king set out his qualities, the chapter on the just sceptre set out the way of justice, and the chapter on not causing fear showed the evil of a rule of dread. Kannottam follows from these. Justice is needed and sometimes severity too, but without tenderness in between, government becomes a heartless machine. Valluvar calls that heart kannottam.

This chapter is needed greatly in our time. In a life of speed and competition we have hardly time to look truly at another's face. We speak while looking at a phone, and in haste we fail to notice another's trouble. Valluvar's verses ask us to slow down and look with the heart.

Chapter story

Shabari's Fruits

From the Ramayana: Rama and Lakshmana, searching for Sita, walked deep into the Dandaka forest and reached the banks of the river Pampa. There stood the hermitage of the sage Matanga. In it lived an aged woman ascetic, Shabari. Her guru Matanga had told her, 'One day Rama will come here, and after seeing him you will be liberated.' Trusting that word, she had waited for years.

Every day she swept the hermitage clean. She picked flowers and arranged them. She gathered wild berries from the forest. But thinking that Rama would not like them if they were sour, she tasted each one herself and set aside only the sweet ones. She did not remember that these were touched by her own mouth; her love for Rama was that artless.

When Rama came she wept with joy. She bowed at his feet and set her humble food before him. Lakshmana realised the fruits had been tasted and hesitated. But Rama looked into the purity of her heart. 'These fruits given with love are nectar to me,' he said, and ate each of them happily. He did not look at her lowly birth or at the tasted fruit; he looked at her devotion.

Having received that kindly glance, Shabari felt her austerity fulfilled. Taking leave of Rama, she gave up her body in the fire of yoga and reached a higher world, the Ramayana says. Before going she is said, by tradition, to have told Rama of Sugriva and the way to Rishyamukha where he lived.

In this scene Rama's kannottam is seen fully. Though a prince, he did not neglect the love of a simple forest woman. Differences of rank, the hesitations of rule, even the tasting did not weigh on his mind. His eye saw the love within. What better proof of 'kannottam ennum kazhiperung kaarigai unmaiyaan undivvulagu'?

The years Shabari spent waiting for Rama show the depth of her austerity. Time passed, old age came, yet her faith did not fade. Passers-by or other sages might have told her to lose hope. But each dawn she decorated the hermitage, thinking, 'Today Rama will come.' Her waiting had itself become worship.

Even today the lesson Rama gives is to accept without scorn, as beneath our dignity, a small gift brought with love by a humble person at our door. That acceptance is kannottam.

Devotees in later times have sung in many ways of the fruits Rama ate. Their meaning is that the sweetness lay not in the taste of the fruit but in the love of the giver. Rama's acceptance without noting any difference made him close to all. A regard that sees no high or low by birth is honoured in this land's tradition as a divine quality.
