Explanation

The social consequence of sloth is told in this verse. One who loves sloth ruins not only his own life; he also becomes the object of others' scorn. 'Idipurindhu ellum sol' are words that rebuke and ridicule, speech that begins as advice and ends in scorn. Such words come continually from relatives, neighbours and friends.

In 'madipurindhu', 'purindhu' means doing by choice. It indicates that sloth does not simply come and settle; a man cultivates it willingly. Those who cannot work or are ill are not subject to this kind of scorn. The one rebuked is able to work but unwilling.

We may think of another side of this scorn. One who rebukes may sometimes wish our good. His harsh words may be the ringing of a bell to wake us. One who takes it well will rise and work; one who takes it with resentment will sink further into sloth.

Either reading leads to the same point: idleness invites sharp words, and the wise listener turns them into fuel.

In today's world the voices of the rebuking also rise on social media. Public scorn sometimes breaks a person instead of raising him. So we should give correction to others with love and measure, and we should learn to take the rebukes of others as lessons.

A story

The Talk at the Pongal Ground

In a village near Tirunelveli, every year after Thai Pongal a kabaddi tournament for the youth was held. People gathered on the village ground to watch. That year the village youth Ganesan had put his name down for the competition but did not come to practice and slept at home. 'I am talented; I need no practice,' he would say.

The coach Muthuraman called him many times. Ganesan kept postponing: 'I will come tomorrow.' On match day, as soon as he began to play, he was out of breath and his legs weakened. The opposing players caught him. The team lost.

After the match the talk of the people on the ground reached his ears. 'Only the name is big; a player without practice is useless.' 'One who ate and slept through Pongal plays like this.' Even his father said in shame, 'You have let down those who trusted you and put you in the team.' Ganesan's face reddened.

That night he burned inside with anger. 'What do they know?' he thought. But as the night went on his mind quieted. Was there no truth in what they said? It was true that he had not gone to practice. Next morning at dawn he stood at Muthuraman's door. 'Sir, I want to begin practice today for next year,' he said.

He worked hard for a year. In the tournament after the next Pongal he played as team captain. The team won. On the same ground the same people applauded him. 'It was those scornful words that woke me,' he said later.

Rebuking words hurt, but the one who accepts them as a lesson rises.

To reflect on

When others rebuke me, do I take it as a lesson?
