Explanation

The last verse of the chapter ends with a great hope. A king free from sloth, says Valluvar, will gain all that 'adiyalandhaan thaayadhu'. Adiyalandhaan is Trivikrama, Vishnu who came as Vamana and measured the worlds with three strides. The Purana says that with his first stride he measured the earth and with the second the heavens. Valluvar says that one without sloth will gain a height so great as to rule all those worlds together.

Though this is a hyperbole drawing on a Puranic statement, its inner meaning is clear: effort without sloth has no limit. There is no bound to how high a person can go through his labour. Commentators explain it as the strength to conquer the whole world and the merit to rule a great realm.

The verse joins with the opening of the chapter and completes a circle. At the start Valluvar said sloth puts out the lamp of the family; at the end he says freedom from sloth will raise one to the measure of the world. Small and great, fall and rise are shown as the two limits of one quality.

The message for us is simple: the limits we hold in our lives today are mostly those we have drawn ourselves. If we remove sloth and strive each day, those limits keep extending. To measure the world may seem a dream, yet every small step towards it is real.

A story

Mahabali and Vamana

From the eighth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana: Mahabali, grandson of Prahlada born in the asura line, was a king of great effort and dharma. He conquered the gods and ruled the three worlds. With the help of his guru Shukracharya he performed the Vishvajit sacrifice and obtained a divine chariot and bow. Because he acted ceaselessly without sloth, strength came to him to reach heaven.

The gods, having lost their world, prayed to Vishnu. Vishnu was born to Kashyapa and Aditi as Vamana. In the form of a short Brahmin boy he went to the place where Mahabali was conducting a sacrifice. Mahabali welcomed him joyfully and asked, 'What do you desire?' Vamana said, 'Three paces of land are enough for me.'

Shukracharya warned Mahabali, 'This is no ordinary boy; he is Vishnu. Do not give him the gift.' But Mahabali did not go against his word. 'After saying I shall give, to refuse is not dharma. Even if the Lord himself comes and asks, I shall give,' he said. He poured water and gave the gift.

Vamana grew tall and stood as Trivikrama. With the first pace he measured the earth, and with the second the heavens. When no place remained for the third, Mahabali offered his head. Vishnu placed his foot on his head and sent him to the netherworld. But praising his firmness and truthfulness he granted him a boon and made him king of Sutala. Tradition says he was permitted to come once a year to see his people. That is celebrated in Kerala as Onam and remembered in Tamil tradition in the name of Mahabali.

Here the phrase 'adiyalandhaan thaayadhu' is directly indicated. The Puranic background to the verse is that Mahabali gained the three worlds because he strove without sloth. The height he attained came from labour; what he lost was through his nature of honouring dharma and his word.
