Explanation

Valluvar here says that there are two kinds of knowledge. One is the subtle intelligence that comes at birth, 'mathinutpam'. The other is book knowledge that comes by learning. When one has both, nothing remains hidden from him and no problem is beyond him. 'Athinutpam yaavula munnirpavai' asks which of the subtlest problems can stand before them.

Natural intelligence alone may go astray. It needs the discipline of learning. Learning alone may become an empty load. It needs the sharpness of natural subtlety. One is the edge of the sword, the other the training to use it. Only both together bring victory.

Commentators take 'nool' to mean works on politics and ethics. They hold that the minister must be proficient in political texts. In today's world we can widen it to professional, legal and social knowledge.

The verse prizes learning and also honours natural intelligence. Not only the learned but one with the power to observe and reflect keenly can be a minister. It is our task also to grow that power.

We may think of natural intelligence and book learning as two wheels. A cart with one wheel cannot move forward. Only when both roll together does it go fast and straight. Valluvar honours both wheels alike.

We too, instead of stopping at reading books, can practise closely examining and reflecting on our daily experiences. Then learning joins life and becomes subtle.

Yudhishthira's Answers to the Yaksha

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata comes the rare event called Yaksha Prashna. At the end of their forest exile the Pandavas were tormented by thirst. Nakula went to fetch water and reached a pond. A yaksha there stopped him: 'Drink after answering my questions.' Nakula ignored it, drank and fell unconscious. Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima fell likewise.

At last Yudhishthira came there and saw his brothers lying fallen. Hearing the yaksha's voice he said, 'Ask your questions; I will answer.' The yaksha asked many questions, some subtle: 'What is heavier than earth? What is higher than the sky? What is swifter than the wind? What is more numerous than grass?'

Yudhishthira thought calmly and replied: 'Heavier than earth is the mother; higher than the sky is the father; swifter than wind is the mind; more numerous than grass are cares.' Another question: 'What is the greatest wonder in the world?' Yudhishthira said, 'Seeing beings die every day, the rest think they will live for ever. That is the wonder.' This answer shows life experience along with book learning.

Another question: 'What is the path?' He said, 'The Vedas differ; the Smritis differ; the sages do not all say one thing; the truth of dharma is hidden in a cave; the path is the one the great have gone.' This is a measured answer joining natural intelligence and learning.

The yaksha, pleased, said, 'I shall revive one of your brothers; whom?' Yudhishthira chose Nakula. His reason: 'Kunti has one son, myself, living; Madri too must have one son alive.' Seeing this fairness the yaksha revived them all; tradition says he was Dharmadeva.

Here Yudhishthira's natural subtlety and learning together overcame the obstacle. This is the living example of 'mathinutpam noolodu udaiyaarkku athinutpam yaavula munnirpavai'.
