Explanation

The previous verse joined natural intelligence and book learning. This verse goes a step further: one must not apply what is learnt in books as it is but act knowing the world's practice too. 'Seyarkai' is the method of action known from texts. 'Iyarkai' is the course of the world, the nature of men and the character of the situation. True knowledge is to adapt and apply what is learnt to the context.

Sometimes a rule in a text says one thing, but the practice of that time is another. One who clings to the text alone may err. One with worldly knowledge understands the purpose of the text and applies it fittingly. That is practical knowledge.

Commentators explain 'ulagaththu iyarkai' as the nature of worldly people, that is, human qualities and customs. If a minister frames law without knowing the nature of the people it fails in practice. The best adviser is one who knows beforehand how people will behave.

The verse does not belittle books. In 'seyarkai arindhak kadaiththum' the need for book knowledge is accepted. But the message is that it is not enough. Learning is the guide; worldly experience is its eye.

Today a doctor, teacher or engineer does not stop at what is learnt in books but sees the real condition of people and acts. Those who do so succeed.

A story

What Dharmavyadha Taught

This is the story of Dharmavyadha told by sage Markandeya to Yudhishthira in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Kaushika, a young brahmin, was well learned in the Vedas and practised penance. One day, as he sat in penance under a tree, a crane dropped its droppings on him from above. He looked at it in anger, and the story says the crane fell burnt. He became proud of his ascetic power.

Later, begging alms, he went to the door of a house. The woman of the house was serving her husband. She came a little late. Kaushika glared in anger. The woman said calmly, 'I am not a crane; your anger will do me nothing. Serving my husband is my penance.' Kaushika was astonished and asked how she knew of the burnt crane.

She said, 'You have not yet fully known dharma. In Mithila there lives a hunter, Dharmavyadha. Go to him and learn.' Kaushika went to Mithila. There Dharmavyadha was selling meat at his shop. He welcomed Kaushika and said, 'I know you were sent by a devoted wife.'

Dharmavyadha explained his work: 'I do my hereditary work. I serve my parents lovingly. I speak the truth. I feed others. This is my dharma.' Kaushika marvelled at his wisdom and simplicity. He realised that leaving his parents to practise penance was itself wrong. He returned home and served them.

In this story Kaushika had learned the Vedas but did not know the ways of the world and the true dharma of life. He learned it from a hunter. It is a fine example for the verse 'seyarkai arindhak kadaiththum ulagaththu iyarkai arindhu seyal'.
