Explanation

This is one of Valluvar's harsh comparisons. He puts on the same scale those who, in forming friendship, calculate at every step 'What will I get?' and the thieves who carry away goods. 'Uruvadhu' is the profit that is to come. 'Seerthookkum' is to put on the scales and weigh. They conduct friendship as a business, reckoning how much will come back for how much given.

Thieves take what they want; likewise such friends are intent on what they can get from us. Once their need is met they disappear. For them friendship is a one-way road. True friendship is a two-way road in which giving is itself the joy and there is no accounting.

'Kolvaarum' may be read as 'those who are takers', whose eye is on what they receive rather than what they give. In today's life this is easily seen. Some keep an account of how much they have done and how much others have done, and handle relationships with that ledger. From them real friendship cannot be expected. The inner meaning of the verse is that we should put away the scale from our own friendships.

Yet Valluvar's word is not 'avoid every person who ever benefits from us'. Real friends do benefit one another all the time. The thief-like friend is the one who calculates beforehand and measures afterwards. The test is the attitude, not the exchange.

A story

The Moneylender Friend

In a small town near Theni, a farmer named Palanisamy hoped to sell the paddy from his fields for the Pongal festival and clear his debts. That year the rain was low and the crop did not grow well. The debt grew large. A man named Manivannan, who often came to his house and mixed freely, ran a moneylending shop.

Manivannan showed Palanisamy great affection. "Brother, ask for whatever you need; we are comrades," he said. For Pongal he brought sweets to the house. He bought new clothes for Palanisamy's children. Palanisamy believed him to be a true friend.

Later Manivannan lent Palanisamy money at a high interest. "It is for a friend, so do not worry," he said, and took his signature. He also asked for the deed of the field as security. Palanisamy hesitated, but Manivannan's loving words melted his hesitation.

The next year too the crop failed. When Palanisamy could not repay, Manivannan's face changed. "We are friends, but business is business," he said. The field passed into his hands. Palanisamy was left empty-handed.

An elder in the town heard of this, came to him and said, "Son, this is why Valluvar said there is no difference between a friendship that weighs gain and a thief." Palanisamy later recovered the land with the help of the temple trust. But the event became a great lesson for him. He told his children not to trust everyone who comes in the name of friendship.
