Explanation

There are some who stand as an obstacle to a good work we undertake. 'Ollum karumam' is a work that we can accomplish. One who 'udatrubavar', that is, vexes and obstructs it, may be dressed as a friend but is truly an obstacle to our growth. Valluvar says that friendship with such persons should be allowed to slip away without argument ('sollaadaar sora vidal').

There is a subtle piece of advice here. If we quarrel directly with the obstructing friend it will turn into a new enmity, and he may spoil our work still further. So we should calmly reduce our contact in a way that does not wound his feelings. 'Sora vidal' is to let go slowly, like a thread slipping from the hand. By this our work goes on and our peace of mind is preserved.

In today's life there are many friends who keep saying to our new venture, 'You cannot do it.' Some, unable to bear our growth, voice discouragement. To argue with them is a waste of our energy. It is wise to lessen our dealing with them quietly and proceed towards our goal.

The advice has a corollary: not every discouraging voice is an obstructing friend. A friend who warns us of a real risk is doing his duty, as the chapter on friendship taught. The verse is about those who obstruct a work that is within our power, out of envy or timidity, and keep on obstructing it.

A story

The Navaratri Golu

During the days of Navaratri, in a street in Chennai, Lalitha wished to set up a golu in her house. She had longed to do so from her youth. Though her house was small, she planned to arrange seven steps beautifully in the space she had. She collected her grandmother's old dolls and bought new ones.

Her friend Mala at first spoke lovingly. But as days passed she began to find fault with every effort for the golu. "Where is the space for seven steps? This will not happen," she said. "The dolls are costly; it is a waste," she said. "Can you host so many people?" she said. Day by day Lalitha's enthusiasm diminished.

Lalitha did not argue with Mala. "I'll think about what you say," she said with a smile. But after that she told Mala less about her plans. She slowly changed the time of their usual evening meetings. In the days of preparing the golu she called her mother and an elderly neighbour to help.

On the first day of Navaratri a beautiful seven-step golu bloomed in Lalitha's house. Everyone in the street came to see. Mala came too, and said shyly, "It is beautiful." Lalitha, showing no bitterness, said, "Come, take some sundal."

Later Lalitha told her daughter, "Do not quarrel with those who obstruct our work. Let them slip away. Our work will speak."
