Explanation

In this verse Valluvar shows the relation between learning and character with subtlety. We generally believe that education transforms a person. But for 'maanaarkku', for those without worth, or without the capacity to let learning settle in the heart, he says it is hard to become good in mind even after learning many good things. 'Mananallar' is one good in mind. Learning increases knowledge, but changing character is a more complex task than learning.

Why does this verse appear in the chapter on unreal friendship? To teach us not to be deceived by assuming that the learned must be good. Some may have studied books well and speak refined words, yet harbour deceit inside. Degrees and knowledge may add strength to their pleasant faces. So we should decide friendships by conduct, not by learning.

Today there is a tendency to trust a person because he has a degree, holds a high post or speaks well. This verse asks us to pause. Good learning is a path to a good mind, but it is not a guarantee. For the mind to become pure, humility, virtue and practice are needed along with knowledge.

The verse also gently turns on the learner. If learning has not made us kinder, the failure is ours and not the book's. Each time we read something good it is worth asking what small change it asked of us and whether we have made it.

A story

Duryodhana's Admission

In the tradition of the Mahabharata there is a famous utterance of Duryodhana. It is not that he lacked education. He learnt archery, swordsmanship, mace-fighting, statecraft and dharma from the finest teachers such as Drona and Kripa. In mace-play he equalled Bhima. He knew the meaning of the sacred texts.

But envy and greed had settled in his heart. Before the war, when Krishna came as envoy urging peace, he said, "Duryodhana, you know dharma. Act accordingly." Then, tradition says, Duryodhana spoke a bitter truth. "I know what dharma is, but my mind does not incline to it. I know what adharma is, but my mind does not turn away from it. Someone within my heart drives me thus."

This admission is profound. He himself reveals the state of conduct unchanged despite knowledge. He learnt many good things, but his mind did not become good. He used his knowledge to justify deceit. He cited legal subtleties for the dice game. When he refused to give the Pandavas land, he said, "I will not give even as much land as the point of a needle."

When Krishna went as envoy, Duryodhana welcomed him formally in court and hosted him with sweet words. But inside that sweetness there was no truth. The learning he had was an ornament for his face, not a lesson for his heart.

Here the truth of the verse 'palanalla katrakkadaith thu mananallar aaguthal maanaarkku arithu' becomes clear. Duryodhana's learning did not make him good. So we must not trust a person merely because he is learned.
