Unreal Friendship · Kootaanatpu

Unreal friendship is the false intimacy of enemies who pose as friends and wait like an anvil for the chance to strike. Valluvar warns us not to trust sweet words, bowed hands or tears, but to read the heart through deeds, and to keep inner distance while staying civil.

Introduction

In the chapter on Evil Friendship we learnt of the friendship of the wicked. Now the chapter 'Koodaa Natpu', Unreal Friendship, speaks of its harshest form: the relationship of enemies who pose as friends. 'Koodaa' means not joining in heart, not fitting. The theme is how to recognise the friendship of those who seem joined outwardly but are not joined within, and how to deal with them. It touches both the political wisdom of the Wealth section and the subtle human understanding of everyday life.

The first verse gives the image of the smith's anvil. The anvil is the platform for striking; it may seem quiet but is ready, when the right spot is found, to form or to destroy. Those who stand in rows showing friendship while their hearts do not join are like that. The second verse says that the friendship of those who are not kin but look like kin keeps changing like a mind that follows gain. The third states a complex truth: however many good things the unworthy learn, it is hard for them to become good in mind.

Verses four to eight show ways to identify deceivers. Fear the deceitful whose faces are sweet but whose hearts are bitter. Do not trust by words alone those who are not at peace in mind. Even if enemies speak good things like friends, their words are soon known. Do not trust the bowing of words; remember that the bending of a bow is for harm.

Verses nine and ten teach wise ways of handling them. A weapon may hide in folded hands; an enemy's tears are the same. Those who, after receiving much from us, then despise us should be embraced with a smile and the friendship let die. And when the time comes that an enemy appears as a friend, befriend him with the face and drop the friendship in the heart.

The danger of unreal friendship lies in its appearing, at first, as friendship. An open enemy comes with a sword, so we put on armour. But one who comes with a smiling face shows no weapon in his hand. We invite him in, feed him and share secrets. When his true face shows, our guard has been lowered completely. That is why Valluvar lists signs one upon another in this chapter; one who knows the signs is rarely deceived.

Valluvar does not ask us to answer deceit with deceit. He asks us to keep culture and courtesy outside and watchfulness within. In office, politics and business we see those who mix with a pleasant face and hold enmity inside. The wisdom of this chapter is to show them neither hostility nor trust.

Chapter story

Kalanemi in a Hermit's Guise

This scene from the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana has been sung by Kamban and many other poets. In the war of Lanka, Lakshmana was felled by an arrow of Ravana's son Indrajit. The physician said that the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalaya was needed to revive him. Hanuman set out through the sky to bring it. If the herb did not reach before dawn, Lakshmana would not live.

Hearing this, Ravana devised a ruse to hinder Hanuman. He called his maternal uncle, the demon Kalanemi, and said, "Take the guise of a hermit on the way and stop him." Kalanemi first refused: "I cannot kill Rama's messenger; yet I accept your order." He set up a hermitage on a mountain slope along Hanuman's route, and sat there with matted locks, saffron robe, rudraksha beads, staff and water pot like a sage.

Hanuman was deeply anxious at that moment. Lakshmana's life was in his hands, and every moment was precious. When he saw Kalanemi's hermitage, thirst and weariness afflicted him. Sweet speech and cool water seemed just what he needed. Deceivers always make our need their net, showing food to the hungry and rest to the weary in order to stop them.

Kalanemi was skilled in his disguise. Vedic mantras were mixed into his speech and he sat with closed eyes as if in penance. At first Hanuman felt no doubt at all. In haste he overlooked any tremor in the sage's voice when Rama's name was spoken. The warning came as divine grace.

Flying through the sky, Hanuman saw the hermitage in the distance and descended. The sage welcomed him in a gentle voice. "Come, son, I know your journey. You are going to bring the Sanjeevani for Rama. You seem very tired. Bathe in my pond here, drink water and rest a while before you go."

Hanuman trusted the loving words. When he stepped into the pond a crocodile seized his leg. Hanuman tore it in two, and from it appeared a celestial maiden. Freed from a curse, she warned him: "Hanuman, this is no hermit but the demon Kalanemi, a deceiver sent by Ravana. Do not trust him."

Hanuman turned at once to the false ascetic. "My teacher, let me give you your fee," he said, wound his tail around him and dashed him against the ground. As he died he appeared in his true form. The deceit was ended. Hanuman flew on towards the herb mountain.

The story shows the danger of unreal friendship and the benefit of vigilance. Sweet speech, saffron robe, hospitality and rest were all a net set to delay Hanuman. This friendship that did not join in heart waited like an anvil. Luckily a warning came.
