Explanation

This verse gives the central idea of the chapter. 'Venmai' here is folly or petty knowledge. 'Onmai udaiyam yaam' means 'we have shining wisdom'. The conceit of thinking so of oneself is what Valluvar calls venmai. That is, more than one who has no knowledge, the one who thinks himself wise is the unwise one.

The depth of this definition lies in its paradox. To think that one has knowledge is itself the mark of lacking it, because real knowledge knows its limit. As Socrates is said to have said 'I know that I do not know', the Tamil tradition praises humility with 'what I have learnt is a handful of sand'.

Conceit becomes a wall that blocks knowledge. The conceited man will not accept new ideas, will not hear advice and will not see his errors. So his growth stops. Because he believes that he knows himself, even if others consider him truly wise, he loses learning.

In today's world, as information is plentiful, the thought 'I know' grows easily. What is looked up in a search engine does not become knowledge. So the habit of testing one's knowledge with humility is all the more important.

So, taking this verse as a mirror, if we ask 'At what moment do I think myself wise?' that very moment is where our petty knowledge shows.

A story

Narada's Pride

The Bhagavata and other Puranas have a story about Narada. Narada is a great devotee of Vishnu, wandering the three worlds playing his veena and singing 'Narayana, Narayana'. Once, after doing penance, he thought he had conquered desire. Shiva warned him, 'Do not tell this to Vishnu.' But Narada went proudly to Vishnu and told of his victory.

Vishnu sensed his pride and wished to remove it. By his maya he created a beautiful city. The king of that city had a lovely daughter named Vishnumaya. Her svayamvara was in progress. Narada was bewitched by her beauty. Forgetting the glory of his victory, he longed to marry her.

Narada went to Vishnu and begged, 'Give me your form so that the princess will marry me.' Vishnu said, 'I will do what is good for you,' and changed him to have a monkey's face. Narada, unaware of his face, went to the svayamvara. The princess passed Narada and garlanded Vishnu. The assembly laughed at Narada's monkey face.

Narada saw his reflection in water and was filled with anger and shame. He cursed Vishnu. Then the city and the princess vanished like magic. Narada realised his pride and error and asked pardon. Vishnu blessed him lovingly.

In this tale Narada is a very great devotee and scholar. Yet the pride 'I have conquered desire' deluded him. This is the 'venmai', the 'onmai udaiyam yaam ennum serukku'. Not only the unwise but even the wise falls into shallowness when pride comes.

Tradition looks at Vishnu's act with compassion: he did not punish Narada; he removed his pride and raised him. The story says that humility is the first quality of a devotee.
