Explanation

This verse tells a subtle way to face ikal. 'Ikal ethir saaindhu ozhuka vallaar' are those who, when ikal arises, do not stand against it and fight, but lean before it, that is, bend, yield and conduct themselves. 'Migal ookkum thanmaiyavar yaare', who would wish to overthrow such a person? No one, is the idea.

Here 'saaidhal' is humility. The simile that the reed which bends in the wind escapes the storm while the big tree that stands against it falls with roots fits here. If we stand against ikal, ikal grows strong; if we conduct ourselves humbly, ikal subsides by itself. No one wishes to destroy the one who yields, because there is nothing in him to conquer.

It must be clear that this is not cowardice. Valluvar says 'vallaar', those who are able to do so. Humility is easy for the weak; for the strong it is rare. So such humility is a mark of great mental strength.

Commentators also take it as 'one who sets ikal aside without opposing it'. In any case the idea is one: one who has the power to avoid confrontation has fewer enemies.

In today's life, those who always try to win arguments in relationships and workplaces lose friends; those who yield where necessary gain respect. Realising this makes life easier.

So at times bending is the way of standing tall.

A story

Yudhishthira Rescues Duryodhana

An episode occurs in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. The Pandavas were in exile in the forest. Duryodhana, wishing to gloat over their suffering, came to the forest with a great retinue. This was done under the pretext of going to inspect cattle, called 'Ghoshayatra'. On the way, when he tried to camp where the gandharva king Chitrasena's pleasure pond lay, a clash occurred.

Duryodhana's army was defeated by the gandharvas. Chitrasena captured Duryodhana, his brothers and their wives. Duryodhana's ministers rushed to Yudhishthira for help. 'Your kinsmen are in prison,' they said.

Bhima laughed. 'The gandharvas have done what we ought to have done. Why should we worry for his suffering?' But Yudhishthira said calmly, 'Brother, within the family we may quarrel. But if an outsider insults one of our family, we become a hundred and five. Arjuna, go; free them.'

Arjuna fought the gandharvas and freed Duryodhana. Chitrasena, Arjuna's friend, explained what had happened. Duryodhana returned with head bowed in shame.

Yudhishthira helped even one who hated him, expecting nothing in return. He acted worthily of his name 'Ajatashatru', one without enemies. The verse 'ikal ethir saaindhu ozhuka vallaarai yaare migal ookkum thanmaiyavar' shines in this. By bending, his greatness rose.

Such conduct of the Pandavas later became the reason the world accepted that dharma was on their side. A mind that gives no place to ikal has the strength to bring even its enemies along.
