Explanation

This verse tells how we should respond to those who deliberately do harm to us. 'Pagal karuthi patraa seyinum' means even if they do acts unfriendly to us with a mind of division. 'Ikal karuthi innaa seyyaamai thalai' means that not doing harm in return with a mind of hostility is best. That is, taking revenge is not the highest way.

Here 'thalai' is the foremost or best. Valluvar calls non-injury the chief path. This continues his chapter on not doing harm. As in the verse 'innaa seydhaarai oruththal avarnaana nannayam seydhu vidal', the best punishment for one who did harm is to do good to him and make him ashamed.

In practice this is hard. When harm comes to us anger and the wish for revenge naturally rise. But revenge feeds the disease of ikal on both sides. One strikes back, the other strikes again, and ikal becomes an endless chain. To break the chain, at least one party must stop doing harm from its side.

This is not a verse telling us to accept harm and stay silent. Self-defence and seeking justice are not wrong. The subtlety is that our action should be moved by good aims such as justice and safety, not by a hostile intent. The very word 'ikal karuthi' asks about the intent.

So when others have done us harm, we should guard our mind from letting hostility enter. This is the first step of freedom from ikal.

A story

Rama and Kaikeyi

In the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana, the scene of Rama going into fourteen years of forest exile is deeply moving. Kaikeyi halted Rama's coronation and sent him to the forest. For Rama, Sita and Lakshmana it was a great grief. Yet Rama accepted it calmly.

Lakshmana boiled with anger. 'This is Kaikeyi's scheme. Even violating father's word, I will crown you. I will destroy her and her son,' he said. Rama calmed him. 'Brother, do not blame Kaikeyi. She is my mother. It is my duty to keep father's word. This is divine will.'

When Rama went to Kaikeyi he spoke with great respect and no bitterness. Before leaving for the forest he took her blessing. Even when he went to his other mothers, he did not say one disparaging word about Kaikeyi. When Kausalya spoke in anger, he said, 'Mother, Kaikeyi has done no wrong; she is not the cause. I am not suffering because of this.'

After many years in the forest Rama never spoke ill of Kaikeyi. When Bharata came and grieved for his mother's act, Rama consoled him too. Tradition says that on returning he first bowed to Kaikeyi.

Rama's conduct is living proof of the verse 'pagal karuthi patraa seyinum ikal karuthi innaa seyyaamai thalai'. Even when the greatest harm came to him, Rama did not let ikal enter his mind. So his family, instead of splitting, became one again.

Tradition praises this as Rama's greatest distinction. He is worshipped as God not because he was invincible but because he had conquered himself.

When we too think of harms that have come to us, we may recall Rama's lesson: to accept the harm yet not accept hostility is the best.
