Kataragama, deep in the forest of southern Sri Lanka, is where Murugan met Valli according to local tradition. The sanctum there has no image; behind the curtain there is believed to be only a sacred yantra. People of many communities, Tamil and Sinhala, worship there. Every year devotees walk for weeks through the forest from Jaffna on the pada yatra pilgrimage.
