Meaning

The spear that whirls in manifold ways, so that the worlds of the gods and the eight directions spin, fire spins, the surging seas spin, the lives of the asuras spin and every place spins, shining as if a hundred crore suns and moons had risen, while all the worlds are dazed at the ringing of its bells. O victorious spear of Kanda, Murugan, Kumara, husband of Valli of the generous hunters, the compassionate Lord who, when I tremble at the sight of Yama coming at me on his buffalo with his staff and cruel noose, black-hued, with crescent-like tusks and fiery eyes, says 'Fear not' and gives me his lotus feet!

Explanation

The first half shows the spear's immense power in whirling words. The second is intimate: when I tremble at the sight of Yama, he says 'fear not'. The spear that sets the cosmos spinning also takes away my fear.

From the history of the Tiruchendur temple

The idol that came back

Temple history says that in the seventeenth century the Dutch seized the Tiruchendur temple and carried Murugan's festival image away on a ship. A fierce storm rose at sea, and the frightened sailors cast the image into the water. Later a devotee, Vadamalaiyappa Pillai, was shown the place in a dream, and the image was recovered from the sea where a lime was seen floating. People say the marks of the sea water can still be seen on that image.
