Meaning

The sharp spear that won peerless fame in the world: it cut the root of the mango tree that Sura became, pierced through the cool Krauncha mountain, found its way through the chests of the mighty asuras, saw Brahma of the lotus imprisoned and Indra freed from prison, won the blessing of the chief of the sages of the sacrifice, the praise of the gods in high heaven, and the song of Nakkeerar, master of words. O spear in the red-gold hand of Guha, the son of Mahadeva and the brother of the elephant-faced god: of Shiva who wears the crescent moon and the Ganga in his matted hair, who is death to Death, the great protector, who bears bow, sword, thunderbolt and trident, who wears serpents as ornaments and the directions as his garment, the three-eyed one.

Explanation

This verse lists the spear's deeds in order: it cut down the mango tree that Sura became, split the Krauncha mountain, saw Brahma imprisoned for not knowing the meaning of Om, and freed Indra. Among its glories the poet also counts the Thirumurugatruppadai, the poem Nakkeerar sang. The second half piles up Sanskrit names of Shiva, Murugan's father.

Tiruvilaiyadal tradition, the story of Nakkeerar

The Spear that Opened the Cave

From the traditional story. Once, while Nakkeerar sat in penance, a demon seized him and shut him in its mountain cave. Nine hundred and ninety-nine others were already held there, and the demon was waiting for the thousandth before devouring them all. Nakkeerar turned his mind to Murugan and sang the Thirumurugatruppadai. Murugan's spear flew to the cave, split it open, destroyed the demon and set every prisoner free.
