Explanation

The verse ends as a question: 'perinum izhappinum en?' What does it matter whether we gain or lose such friendship? Those who come close when there is advantage and drift away when there is none are not true friends. They are friends of advantage. It is a mistake even to think we have a relationship with them. There is no need to rejoice when they come or to grieve when they go.

For 'oppilaar' the commentators give two senses: those who are not equal to us, below our level of character; or those whose petty nature has no comparison. In either case they are unworthy of friendship. The very rhythm of 'urin nattu arin oruum' shows an unsteady nature: friendship on arrival, withdrawal on departure.

There is also a consolation in this. When someone leaves us in our fall we need not grieve; his loss is not truly a loss, for he was never our friend. This thought lightens the mind. At the same time it carries a warning that we ourselves should not be friends of advantage to anyone, but should stand and help even when it serves us nothing.

A simple test follows from the verse: ask what the friendship has survived. If it has never survived a season of the friend's poverty, illness or disgrace, it has not yet been tested. Such friendships are cheap to gain and cheap to lose, and Valluvar bids us price them accordingly.

A story

Drona and Drupada

This is an episode from the life of Dronacharya in the Mahabharata. Drona and Drupada had studied together in their youth in the gurukulam of the sage Bharadvaja. Drupada was then a prince of Panchala and Drona a brahmin. They were close friends. Tradition says Drupada told Drona, "When I become king, I shall give you half of my kingdom."

Time rolled on. Drupada became king of Panchala. Drona suffered poverty. When his son Ashwatthama cried for milk and drank flour mixed in water, believing it to be milk, Drona's heart broke. He remembered his old friend. "He is a king; he will help me," he believed, and went to Panchala.

In the court Drona called out freely, "Drupada, I am your old friend." But Drupada, now king, frowned. "Friendship exists only between equals. What friendship can there be between a king and a poor brahmin? You are asking for something unsuited to your station," he said, insulting Drona before those in the court.

Drona left burning at heart. The assurance Drupada had given in youth was mere words. When there was use for him, when both were students, he befriended; now, seeing no use, he withdrew.

Drona later went to Hastinapura and became teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas. When their training was done he asked, as his fee, that Arjuna bring Drupada captive. Arjuna did so. Drona said to Drupada, "The one who called himself a friend is my prisoner today; now buy your freedom by giving half your kingdom." Drupada, ashamed, gave half.

The man who measured friendship by advantage finally lost half his wealth. Valluvar asks, 'Gain or lose, what of it?' Drupada's friendship ended as a pain to Drona.
