Not killing · Kollaamai

This chapter teaches that not killing is the first of all virtues, that killing brings all other evils, that one must not take another's life even to save one's own, and that death does not approach one who does not kill.

Introduction

Kollaamai means not killing living beings. It is the summit of the chapter on not doing harm. Not doing harm means causing no pain to creatures; not killing avoids the limit of that pain, the removal of life itself. In Indian tradition ahimsa, not harming any life, is counted a supreme dharma. In Patanjali's yoga, ahimsa is the first of the yamas. The Mahabharata says in many places, "ahimsa paramo dharmah". Valluvar states the same truth firmly in Tamil.

The opening couplet answers the question of which act is virtue: non-killing is virtue; killing brings all other evils. The second couplet names sharing food and protecting many lives as foremost among the virtues compiled by the learned. The third and fourth set non-killing as the first good and the good path; only after it comes not lying. The fifth and sixth tell of the height of those among renunciates who keep non-killing, and say that Death cannot approach them.

We should remember that the root of non-killing lies in compassion. The first chapter of the ascetic section is compassion; the feeling of pity begun there grows step by step into abstaining from meat, not doing harm, and not killing. Each chapter is an extension and a deepening of the previous one. Seen so, non-killing is the full working form of grace. The message is that love should show not only in the mind but in each of our acts.

In our country's culture this virtue appears in countless forms: drawing rice-flour kolam for ants, giving the first handful to the cow, setting out water for birds, and living without troubling even crawling creatures are everyday customs. Feeding the multitude at temple festivals is part of the same virtue of relieving the hunger of living beings. What Valluvar calls sharing food and protecting many lives is the essence of this tradition.

The seventh shows the extreme of this virtue: even if your own life will go, do not do the act that removes another's life. The eighth says that even if great wealth is to be had through killing, the noble regard wealth gained by killing as lowly. The ninth and tenth point to how society sees the killers and what suffering they meet.

Subtle questions also arise here: what about killing in war, in self-defence, in hunting for food? Our tradition does not give a single answer. Some paths say one must not kill for any reason; some accept righteous war and self-defence. Valluvar sets the ideal here. How far to follow it each person may think according to his situation. What matters most is our daily steps toward this ideal.

Chapter story

King Vasu and the Sacrifice Dispute

The Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata tells of King Vasu Uparichara. He was king of Chedi and dear to Indra. The Purana says Indra gave him a beautiful aircraft that moved in the sky, and so he was called Uparichara, "one who moves above". He was famed across the land as one who followed dharma well.

Once he undertook a great sacrifice. Gods and sages gathered at it. A dispute arose among them about what should be offered. The Vedic phrase "ajair yashtavyam" had two meanings. Aja can mean a goat, and also seeds or grain. The sages said, "Aja means grain; the sacrifice should be performed with grains, without killing a life." The gods said, "Aja means goat."

We must note Vasu's position in the story. He was no evil man; the land knew him as one steady in dharma. But at a moment when he stood between the gods' wish and the sages' path of compassion, he leaned to the side of power. That one decision brought his fall. It shows that even good people pay a price if they choose the wrong side in crucial questions.

To settle the dispute those present asked King Vasu. Vasu sided with the gods and gave the verdict, "Aja means goat", as the Mahabharata says. It was the verdict the gods favoured. But the sages were angry. They cursed him, saying, "You knew the truth and hid it." At that moment Vasu fell from his aircraft and sank into the earth.

This debate about sacrifice is very old in our tradition. The Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita say that the sacrifice of knowledge is higher than ritual offering. "Better than the sacrifice of material things is the sacrifice of knowledge," says the Gita. In many places in the Mahabharata the sages stress that the path without killing in yajna is the better. Within our own tradition, then, there has been a continuous movement toward non-killing.

Later, the story ends, Vasu worshipped Vishnu and by his grace regained his high state. Different traditions understand this story in different ways. Some take it as evidence that grain offerings are better than animal sacrifice in a yajna. Others take it as an example that Vedic phrases have two meanings. Respecting all traditions, the message of the story for us is: when there is doubt about an act that removes life, the safe course is to choose the side that protects life.

Valluvar opens this chapter with "What is a virtuous act? Not killing; killing brings all other evils." Since the Vasu story shows that one who gave a verdict in favour of taking life fell, it fits this couplet. The image stays in the mind: one who stands on the side of killing, however powerful and famed, falls from the sky.
